Greece, Kefalonia – Beautiful Beaches and Heavenly Peace

Greek Kefalonia is the largest island in the Ionian Sea, located between Lefkada and Zakynthos. People come here mainly for beautiful beaches and peace, because it is not so touristy yet. The capital is Argostoli, which is also worth a visit. We stay in Lixouri and there is a ferry every 30 minutes between Lixouri and Argostoli. One trip costs less than 3 euros and takes 20 minutes.

We have a whole week to explore the island, but mostly we will stay in its western part. The plane shows a landscape similar to Tuscany, but the biggest attraction are the fabulous beaches. About 20 minutes by car from Lixouri is the beautiful pebble beach of Petani with crystal clear water. Here you can spend the whole day, there is a restaurant and all the facilities.

Myrtos beach is considered to be the most beautiful beach on the island. Even when you come to it, you see an incredible panorama and the color of the sea so blue that it is perhaps not even possible. For a change, there is no restaurant and there are no sunbeds, so it retains its natural character. Not far from here is the picturesque village of Assos with colorful houses. You can also head to the unique Xi Beach, which is covered with red sand, which creates a stunning contrast to the white rocks in the background. It is located about 10 km from Lixouri. Other beautiful beaches include Antisamos, Vouti and Skala.

If you want to spend some time shopping, be sure to go to the capital Argostoli. You can enjoy shopping for local products, but you can also see the green sea turtle, about fifty of them live here in the bay, not far from the port. We were lucky too and it was a really fantastic experience. As for shopping, as a souvenir you have to take away the white wine Robola, whose vines are grown on the island, thyme honey, olive oil or nuts. When you get bored of shopping and frappé in the local cafés, head out to the Costa Costa beach, which is covered with fine sand, just outside the city. And in the evening at sunset you can taste real Kefaloni meat pie by the coast.

If you already miss Kefalonia, I recommend Captain Corelli's Mandolin, which was shot here in 2001. This Greek island not only offers beautiful beaches, but there are also caves to see, it is suitable for both cycling lovers and tourists who enjoy mountain hiking.
