Lower Austria: A Perfect Place for Family Vacation I
Holidays at the Farm
Lower Austria is perfect for a family holiday, which we will convince you in the following lines. You will definitely take an unforgettable experience from a holiday trip to the farm. Children will try taking care of farm animals, learn to recognize crops and learn where our food comes from. Not only city children will enjoy riding a tractor or climbing fruit trees, while adults will relax in the yard from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In Lower Austria, it is possible to stay on various family or even children's farms, mountain farms or cottages with a yard. You can find an overview of them here.
Experience Animals
Wildlife lovers will certainly enjoy one of the 23 Lower Austrian nature parks. In Buchenberg Park you will find raccoons and owls in accessible aviaries, which you can safely observe. Children will have fun in Austria's largest rope forest. In the Geras Nature Park, in addition to game enclosures, bird lookout towers and a breeding pond, the biggest attractions are two indigenous lynxes. In the village of Texingtal in the foothills of the Alps, you can caress the llamas and rent them for a hiking trip through the picturesque countryside.
Hiking with Children
However, you can also walk through Lower Austria in a more classic way, as it is crossed by over 15,000 kilometers of hiking trails and 4,200 kilometers of cycle paths along the Danube, through traditional vineyards and unspoiled nature. In addition to challenging routes for sports enthusiasts, you can go on adventure trips suitable for families with children. For example, in Hollabrunn, a picturesque town not far from Znojmo, there are traces of a "cellar cat" (Kellerkatze). It is a local term for cellar mold. Children will learn how to grow and process vines, they can smell and touch various exhibits in the tactile and olfactory museum, and adults will taste the results of the work of Lower Austrian winemakers.
Back in Time to Ancient Rome
One of the most popular topics is the VIA Carnuntum road, which winds between vineyards and monuments through the territory of the long-inhabited Romans. Their center is the globally unique reconstruction of the city of Carnuntum, where there are functional Roman baths, shops and villas, in which time stood still in the times of ancient Rome. This year, events such as Römische Gaumenfreuden, a series of unique gastronomic festivals set in the fourth century AD or the September Römerfestival with a rich program including gladiatorial matches and legionnaires' battles with barbarians will take place again.
In a week we will bring you other irresistible summer tips for holidays in Lower Austria.
