Lower Austria: Great Biking Tips for Trips II

Published: 4.7.2021
If you are looking for tips, inspiration and information about cycling trips to your Lower Austrian neighbors, we will introduce you to a few today. Together we will discover interesting cycle paths around the majestic Danube, for the more sporty we will offer trips to the mountains and in the end we will talk about the renewed cycle map.

Refreshing Danube Biking Trail – EuroVelo 6

The Danube cycle route is one of the most famous in Europe. The Lower Austrian Danube region Wachau-Nibelungengau-Kremstal is perhaps the most beautiful part of the entire cycle path. The route runs along idyllic vineyards and orchards and constantly offers river views.

As the Danube cycling route does not have large height differences, it is also suitable for families with children. One of the most beautiful parts leads through the Wachau. The mighty current of the Danube divides the northern bank with wine terraces and vineyards from the southern bank, which is again characterized by wooded slopes and fruit growing. From the south side of the Danube, a beautiful panorama opens up to the picturesque places of Weißenkirchen, Spitz and Dürnstein. More adventurous cyclists, who will not be discouraged even by the mountain stage of the cycling route, can visit the ruins of Aggstein Castle, from where there is a beautiful view of the Danube Valley.

Popular Traisental Biking Trail

The Traisental cycle route is 111 km long and is one of the most popular cycle routes in Lower Austria. It is suitable for recreational cyclists, but also for sports-oriented families. On the way from the Danube towards Mariazell, cyclists indulge in the gentle rhythm of the river Traisen and enjoy many experiences. In the beginning, fine hills and vineyards predominate. In addition to the majestic Göttweig Abbey and the Augustinian monastery Chorherrenstift Herzogenburg, the route continues to the state capital St. Pölten. Beautiful Baroque houses and the unique Seenerlebnis center invite cyclists to take a pleasant break. Be sure not to miss the great tunnel route from Freiland to Türnitz, where the Eibl-Jet (year-round toboggan run) and refreshing swimming pool will provide even more fun.

Mountain Biking in Vienna Forest

The diverse and hilly Vienna Forest is suitable for mountain biking. The Vienna Woods offer much more than just a nature experience in the Biosphere Park. You can prepare for a total of more than 1000 km of trails for all levels of cyclists, with more than 6,000 orienteering aids and groomed mountain trails.

The cycling map shows great tips for excursion places, monuments, relaxation zones, accommodation, attractions and, above all, a richly marked map full of various cycling adventures. In addition, it contains information on mountain biking, bike paths suitable for children and practical advice. The map can be downloaded for free here.

Ecotravel – With Bike to Bikebus or Train

In recent years, special bus and train lines for cyclists have been popular, especially if you need to get somewhere further. Fees or free bicycle delivery differ from the conditions of the transport companies. E.g. Lower Austrian railways (Waldviertel railway, Wachau railway, Reblaus Express) take bicycles free of charge.

The Mariazell Railway can be used for a fee, and bicycles can be transported on ÖBB trains (marked with a bicycle symbol) without reservation if sufficient space is available. The three regional bus lines, which run along the cycle paths, are equipped with an additional trailer during the season, which can accommodate up to 20 bikes. These lines can be used for transport at a low surcharge.
