Mauricius, Le Morne Brabant – Up the Slave Mountain
This unique mountain (556 m above sea level) is the most famous on the whole island and is located in the southwestern part of Mauritius. Directly below the mountain is a beautiful beach and some of the most luxurious hotels on the island. The mountain is also known for its reputation. In the 19th century, several Mauritian slaves climbed the mountain to find refuge and safety. When a police patrol went after them one day, the slaves decided to jump down the rock rather than get caught. It was on February 1, 1835, and this police unit was informing them that they no longer had to hide and could return because slavery had been abolished.
We set off for the mountain very early in the morning until the sun is still setting. We carry a large supply of water, as there is no way to buy it along the way. We park the car at the entrance, where there is a sign with the inscription Trail: 3.5 km, we write in the diary of visitors and start climbing.
The first part of the journey takes place in the shade of trees, but with huge humidity. The next part is after the sun. We stop in two thirds, where we have amazing views in all directions. We will rest for a while at one of the prospects and continue on. After a while, we will be stopped by a sign that tells us that in the next part of the trail, danger, climbing and we do not recommend continuing the journey without sufficient equipment. After a while of hesitation, we continue on our way, but after a few minutes we are really stopped by steep rock walls and climbing without any protection or ropes, which looks quite demanding and dangerous. Although a little disappointed, we turn around and return to the car.
After returning to the car, he will not forget to write it off the notebook again so that they do not have to look for us on the mountain later. We take off our dirty shoes and set out to find a place on Le Morne beach. Despite the non-completion of our hike, it was a truly beautiful experience with unforgettable views. So if you dare to go upstairs, take the equipment with you!
