Milford Sound – One of the Most Beautiful Trips on New Zealand – VIDEO
It is far from easy to get to Milford Sound. The closest town of Queenstown is some 4 hours away. Yet there is plenty to see on the road, mostly mountains and their many waterfalls. Before you get to the fjord itself, you have to ride through 1.2 km Homer Tunnel which is up in the mountains.
A cruise ship may take you across the entire fjord. One trip takes approx one to two hours. You will sail by many mountain sharply rising from the ocean up to 1200 meters. The Elephant (1517 m) is one of the highest. It looks like an elephant head. Other mountains here are Mitre Peak (1692 m) or The Lion (1302 m) which resembles a crouched lion.
What you'll see next are two waterfalls – Lady Bowen and Stirling Falls. Dozen more appear after rainfall. Water sharply runs down from the mountains to the sea. There is nowhere the water may be contained so it disappears several days after rainfall. Fortunately, it rains often here.
You will have considerable chance to see some wild animals such as dolphines or sea lions, whales or penguins while crossing the fjord. On the shore, there are some New Zealand's non-fyling birds. Closer to the tunnel you might spot kea, green-brown mountain parrots.
It is no wonder that Milford Sound is one of the most popular points of interest in New Zealand, a place you must see. To see amazing summits and steep smountain slopes rising up from the water, is something long to remember.
