Portugal – In Algarve for Sports

The south of Portugalnot only offers a beach roller, it is also full of opportunities for sports. Tourists will certainly enjoy the trails leading around and over the cliffs. The road is rocky and sandy, it is definitely better to take better shoes. In Lagos, a great walk begins just behind the promenade (towards the beach). It runs through the terrain over the cliffs and every moment there are amazing views and great swimming opportunities. It can also be completed on the road, but it would be a shame. At its end, after about three kilometers, there is a beautiful rock formation called Ponta da Piedade, the Farol da Ponta da Piedade lighthouse and also a relatively adrenaline-fueled lookout point. From here, a wooden path leads to Praia do Canavial Beach.
A similar walk is offered by the town of Sagres, where there are historical ruins of Roman buildings and a nice lookout point on Ponta da Atalaia, from where there is a view of the opposite fortress Fortaleza de Sagres.
However, the cliffs in both cities can also be admired from the water. Kayak or paddleboard trips are very popular here. We also went kayaking and it was an amazing experience. Thanks to them, we got to less accessible and often inaccessible places from the mainland, we got a little tired of our hands and bathed on the deserted beaches. Don't worry and be sure to try it too!
This region is also very popular among mountain bike lovers. Rentals are literally on every corner unless you bring your own. There are plenty of opportunities for rides in rougher rocky terrain, but you won't really use a road bike here.
However, what is the main sporting experience in Sagres in particular, everyone probably already knows in advance. Surfing enthusiasts come here from all over Europe. There are a lot of surf schools and there are great conditions. The beaches are often littered with camping surfing lovers, who spend their free time peacefully throughout the season. And that it is almost always there, although the best waves are here in the fall, when various races take place.
Surfing is challenging (especially physically the beginnings), the waves are ruthless, but the experience of riding your first wave is priceless. The only problem is the fact that surfing is highly addictive, expect that like us, you will want to come back.
