Rakousko: Hallstatt – Picturesque Town at the Lake

Published: 6.4.2015
This picturesque town is part of the UNESCO’s world heritage. You can find it in central Austria, in the area called Salzkammergut. This area is lined with high limestone ridges. There are many beautiful lakes.

Hallstatt

Hallstatt is south-east from Salzburg. It is around 70 kilometers away so about 70 minutes of ride in mountain valleys. It is located at the southwest bank of Hallstätter lake. Should you ride from the north, the road follows the lake and then go through a tunnel (Plassen mountain) which ends right in Hallstatt. Due to limited parking spaces, it is better to set off in the early morning.

Hallstatt

Many holidaymakers travel to Hallstatt for its historical part. One of historical streets follows the lake. Houses are crammed there one next to another (some are literally standing on poles above water). It is worth visiting the town for its atmosphere. Another reason to visit are its natural sights: Hallstatt lake, cave systems, and also famous salt quarry located above the town.

Hallstatt

We found out, on the wallk of the mountain with salt quarry there is the ferrata of Echernwand Klettersteig. It is to be found left to a modern rail cable car which goes to a salt quarry. The ferrata begins behind the bottom cable way station. Its level is C/D, and there is a reason for that.

If choose more difficult section, you need strength. Also, you have to keep in mind that it is very sunny wall. The ferata will reward you with beautiful view of the town, and it is real adrenaline experience. The most typical of this ferata is an original ladder leaning fom the wall and going up “the skies”. According to my opinion, the ferata is not suitable for children. It ends at the upper cable way station, i.e. right at salt quarry. Its tour costs about 13 EUR. There is also a suspended observation platform luring visitors who want to make photos of the town and lake.

The northwest of Dachsteinu is characteristic for raising slightly. There are also glaciers. You can’t get to the top no other way than going on your own (there are no cable cars). The western part of Dachstein has only one large mountain cabin Adamek Hütte (2 196 m n. m.), ke které se nejlépe dostanete od Gosausee (10 minutes by car from Gosau village). I tis a beautiful lake great for taking a swim shielded by two thousand meters high mountains in the south.

In 1873 the first steam boat Emperor Franz Joseph I had set sails on the lake and cruises have been made there ever since. The steam boat was a technical marvel the then. It is 33 meters long and also was used as a propriety in couple of movies because it allegedly looks romantic. You can also take a ride by this boat as it is still part of the fleet.
