Published: 24.5.2021
Slovakia is a country that is characterized not only by beautiful nature, but also by a number of sacred monuments. It is a pity that they are overlooked by the number of tourists who come here. Therefore, I decided that at least in this form I will acquaint visitors to the villages of Boleráz and Klčovany with these monuments, their significance and the reason for the settlement.
We will visit the connected villages of Boleráz and Klčovany, which stretch in the Trnava Uplands, 14 km northwest of the district town of Trnava. From here, the train journey takes about 20 minutes.
The custom of beautifying village streets mostly with sacred sculptures, statues and crosses has its roots in the ancient past. They were once built as a remembrance of a historical event, a thanksgiving or a show of respect. Texts are added, from which you will learn the name of the founder, the year of establishment or some wisdom. And Boleráz is no exception in this regard.
Sacral Sights
The dominant feature in the Boleráz area is the Church of St. Michael the Archangel. After the demolition of the old church, which no longer met the needs of the time, a new church was built with a tower topped by an octagonal tin pyramid with a Latin cross. On the left side of the sanctuary is a sacristy. The main altar is dominated by a statue of St. Michael the Archangel. The glazing of the windows is made of colored tables. Above the main entrance portal is carved the year of construction of the church - 1787.
If you go to the right of the main entrance of the church, you will come across a wooden mission cross and a monument to the fallen in front of it in the First World War. The sandstone sculpture was ceremoniously unveiled on November 2, 1927.
Near the church, in front of house No. 573, there is a stone cross from 1906 with a statue of the Virgin Mary. The cross was built by František Janáč, a local peasant. In the cemetery you will find a remarkable main cross, a house of mourning and you will also find a work of art - the Spiral by the carver Andrej Irša. The spiral has two sides, each is different and each is part of one whole. The aim of this work was a non-conflicting depiction of human existence in the form of an abstract wooden realization. You can learn more about this unusual work from the information board.
Our next stop will be in front of the municipal office, where there is a monument to the fallen in World War II. It is enriched with three commemorative plaques. A subsequent walk through the villages led me to a group of statues in front of house no. 405. It is placed on an elevated decorative gable and Saint Joseph with Jesus in his arms is depicted on a pedestal. On the right is a statue of St. Anny, who embraces the little Virgin Mary with her left hand. Nearby is a statue of St. Roch in a hat and pilgrim clothing. At his feet sits a dog with bread in his mouth.
But now we are moving to the local part of Klčovany, the dominant feature is the branch church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary with a sanctuary with a trapezoidal floor plan. It is covered with burnt roofing. The brick tower is terminated by an octagonal pyramid, at the top of which is a sphere and a Latin cross. The church has undergone several repairs over time.
Thanks to its cultural or historical richness, the village of Boleráz and its part of Klčovany are among the most attractive tourist places. Therefore, if you go to Smolenický chateau, Korlátka castle, Dobrá Voda ruins or the ruins of the church and the Katarínka monastery, be sure to stop here. You won't regret it!
Today we will visit the typical hill village of Košariská, which consists of a total of nine homesteads or hill farms. Namely U Štefova, Dolní Košariská, U Plačkova, Horní Košariská, U Martinkova, U Šindelov, U Mosnáků, U Trvajová and Lopušná.
South of Trnava (13 km) by the Gidra stream lies the village of Voderady. In the past, it belonged to the Bratislava county, but for the time being it is part of the Trnava region.
The village of Košolná lies on the right bank of the fertile floodplain of the Parná river, approximately 12 km northwest of the district town of Trnava. The cadastral area with an area of 959 hectares in the north borders Boleráz, in the east and south with Suchá nad Parnou and in the west with the cadastre of Dlhá and Dolní Orešany.
Approximately 15 km from the regional town of Trnava in the beautiful valley of the Blava stream lies the village of Radošovce. Its nearby neighbors are the spa town of Piešťany, Hlohovec Castle or the famous Leopoldov Prison. Today we set out to get to know this unusual village, which was administratively established not so long ago (January 1, 1991), by separating from Jaslovské Bohunice.
After walking through the village of Radošovce, when we returned home, we stopped in Jaslovské Bohunice, which is known to us thanks to the nearby presence of a nuclear power plant. Specifically, we visited the municipal part of Paderovce. It is interesting that three decades ago this part was an independent municipality, so it is no wonder that it still offers several beautiful sights to see.
Less than 8 such from Trnava, in the central part of the Trnava Uplands, lies the village of Bohdanovce nad Trnavou. This medium-sized village is immediately adjacent to the villages of Šelpice and nearby to the villages of Boleráz, Dolná Krupá or Špačince.
After last week's visit to Bohdanoviec nad Trnavou, we will cross the bridge to the neighboring village of Šelpice. They are only 6 km northwest of the regional city of Trnava. They became famous mainly due to embroidery, viticulture and theater activities of local amateurs.
We will not leave the Trnava region even this Monday and visit the village of Buková, whose buildings are at the bottom of the distinctive Bukovská basin. In the eastern part of the village, the area narrows into a deep gorge surrounded by limestone hills. In the cadastre of this village there are up to five cottage areas - Závršie, Hrnčeková dolina, U Maruše, Bílá Hora and Hrudky, so it is clear at first glance that it is a popular cottage, tourist and mushroom locality.
In the western part of the Danubian Lowland is the village of Vištuk, which borders the cadastre of Budmeríc, Modry, Šenkvíc, Báhoňa and the village of Jablonec. Vištuk used to belong to the Bratislava County and the Modra District, but since 1948 it has been included under the Pezinok District and the Bratislava Region.
At the eastern foot of the Little Carpathians near the wine-growing town of Modra, the castle colossus Červený Kámen, protruding from the wooded landscape, will fascinate you from afar. You can get here either from the village of Častá or from the neighboring village of Píla.
On the edge of the Danubian Uplands, at the mouth of the Chtelnička Valley in the northern part of the Little Carpathians, lies the truly beautiful village of Chtelnice. The area in which it is located is one of the oldest inhabited areas in Slovakia.
Pavlice is one of the picturesque villages in the Danubian Lowland. They stretch on the eastern edge of the Trnava Uplands, surrounded by meadows, woods and fields intersected by the Gidra Stream. Over 500 inhabitants enjoy rural life with all the joys and sorrows. Today we will visit this village and we ourselves are curious what it will offer us.
Each village has something special, interesting and pleasing to the eye in its territory. All you have to do is walk through the streets and you will be convinced that this is no different in Križovany nad Dudváhom, which is mainly represented by painted statues. So let's go for a walk through this beautiful village.
The village of Brestovany lies in the northwestern part of the Danube Plain, only 10 km from the district town of Trnava at an altitude of 140 to 150 meters. The cadastral area consists of parts of Velká Brestovany, Malá Brestovany and Horní Lovčice.
The village of Dolné Lovčice, located 6 km from the regional town of Trnava, attracts lovers of wandering through villages and towns with a peaceful atmosphere, several sacral monuments and attractions.
The village of Zavar is located 8 km from Trnava, on the eastern edge of the Trnava loess board. The first written mention dates from 1255. In the village there are many sacred monuments and interesting objects from history. The most attractive ones certainly include the Classicist chateau, the new church dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary from 1907 and the birth house of the composer Gejza Dusík.
In our today’s journey across Slovakia we visit a remarkable ruin located in the region of Trnava only 3 kilometers from Dechtice. People call it Katarinka yet its official name is church and monastery of Saint Catherine of Alexandria.
Fabulously beautiful Smolenice castle now serves as the congress centre of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, and so many people think it is closed to the public. It is not like that.
If you live in the western Slovak or just going there for a few days to visit family or friends, we have another tip for you, where you can spend a pleasant spring day.
