Slovenia: Soča – To the Spring of One of the Most Beautiful Rivers in Europe – VIDEO

Published: 1.9.2020
135 kilometers long, beautifully blue and clean, with lots of canyons and rapids and mainly surrounded by breathtaking scenery. This is the Slovenian river Soča. In today's part of the Slovenian series, we will look at a unique place where the river springs.

A beautiful camp near the village of Trenta will serve as a base. Just cross the footbridge over the river and we will connect to the trail through the local forests, which will lead us upstream to the spring. Theoretically, you can drive to the cottage Koča near Izviru Soče, but you would be prepared for a large part of a very nice and quite relaxing walk.

cesta k pramenu

Thanks to the surrounding limestone, the river acquires a wonderful blue color and its ponds surrounded by large boulders directly attract to bathing. Although it is icy for wet hands, in the end it is still irresistible. Inhale, quickly jump into the water, do two tempos and turn out again. Great refreshment in the steam.

At one point, the trail disconnects from the river and rises sharply. I wipe the sweat from my forehead for a while and wonder why we didn't want to get as close as possible on a motorcycle. But the view of the surrounding mountains, which opens upstairs, is worth it. Then all you have to do is run down a small hill on the road from the Vršič klippe and walk along the plain to the cottage with refreshments.

From the source to this, the river overcomes a decent elevation gain through many small waterfalls and cascades. There is definitely something to look at, we'll just sweat a little again. The final ascent to the spring also offers a bit of adrenaline. The path leads here by stairs and then by a narrow footpath, where we stick to the chains in the rock.

The main spring springs into a small, deep blue lake in the rock, water enters it thanks to a system of karst corridors and seepage in the mountains. The place looks a bit like an entrance to another world.

On the way back, we make a short detour to the Mlinarica gorge and end the trip with another quick swim.

The upper reaches of the Sochi offer much more than just the spring itself. The next day we stop at the Velika korita canyon, another place that offers a refreshing swim in icy, crystal clear water. Just a short distance away are the famous rapids, popular for rafting and kayakers from around the world.

The surroundings of the town of Bovec, through which Soča flows, then offer many other sports and adrenaline experiences. Maybe he'll get to them on his next visit. I am always happy to return to the Sochi Valley.
