Spain II: Tibidabo – Sacred Mountain above Barcelona - VIDEO

Published: 28.4.2015
Having 512 meters, Tibidabo is the highest summit of the Serra de Collserola. Therefore, you should miss it if you want to enjoy one of the best vistas over Barcelona. Tibidabo is on city’s northwest. You can easily distinguish it for its white temple on the top.

Shouldn’t you want to walk there, you can use publica transportation to get to Tibidabo. The most known is the cableway that runs from Plaza del Doctor Andreu to the very top - Funicular de Tibidabo. You just get on L7 line (for instance on Plaza de Catalunya) and travel to Plaza de John Kennedy. There you hop on blue historical streetcar which will get you to the cableway’s bottom station. The streetcar will take you through one of the most beautiful residential areas in Barcelona. Well, the very ride itself could be the goal.

Tibidabo

Neither blue streetcar nor the cableway are part of integrated public transportation system, therefore you would pay some significant price. Another interesting option how to get to the top is taking the other cableway. A bus will get you to the top from cableway’s top station. In this case, an classic ticket will be enough. You just take the lines S1, S2 or S5 to Peu del Funicular. The arrows there will get you to the cableway’s bottom station.

Tibidabo

On the very summit of the mountain, there is beautiful neo-Gothic church Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor the construction of which took the first half of the 20th century. Its interior as well as the observation platform on the top are worth visiting. At the latter place, you can see Barcelona and large part of Catalonia and the Pyrenees. You are at 575 meters! Above the platform, there is only a bronze statue of Jesus Christ made by sculptor Josep Miret.

Tibidabo

At the top station of Funicular de Tibidabo starts also local amusement park. It has been in operation since 1889. It doesn’t offer any extreme rides as is common today. Its main attraction is peaceful family atmosphere and beautiful vistas. An astronomical observatory is nearby.

Tibidabo

Tibidabo is one of the most beautiful experiences I had in Barcelona. I recommend it to you without any hesitation. If you want, you can take part of the journey to the top on foot. The elevation is not steep, and it local landscape calls for a walk.
