Switzerland – Castles and Chateaux
Many castles and chateaux are located in and around the Swiss canton of Bern, so if you have a car, you can drive everything in 4 days with interior tours. But it also depends a lot whether you visit only the castle / chateau or you want to go to the surroundings. Most castles and chateaux are located near the lakes and it is possible to visit large parks. Taking family or wedding photos is practically the order of the day.
The center of this area is the town of Thun with the large Lake Thursee. In the town of Thun it is possible to visit the castle Oberhofen from the 12th century, which can be seen from the main square. The city center itself is also worth a visit, sometimes there are local farmers markets where you can buy local specialties. You can also visit several museums.
As you continue to walk around the lake from the city, you will come across the picturesque Schadau chateau, which lies on an island. You can only get to it by boat, but the view is beautiful. During summer and sunny days, you can see boats or various water sports. On the opposite side of the castle you can see a beautiful view of the mountains. It is quite possible that during the spring and early summer you will see the remains of a blanket of snow.
From here you can continue on foot, by car or by local bus to Spiez. Just in front of it it is possible to visit another magnificent Hünegg castle. It is known for its well-preserved Art Nouveau interiors. Again, there can be a view of the vast lake and its surroundings.
Then head straight to the town of Spiez, home to another of a number of medieval castles. It is possible to look at the castle and visit both the interiors and the outdoor park with a small botanical garden. Again, there is a beautiful view of the lake and mountains.
In this respect, Switzerland is truly a paradise for lovers of castles and chateaux. Most of them are open during the season, and guided tours are available in both German and English. It is also possible to rent audio guides. Some castle tours need to be booked in advance, so check out the official website before visiting. You can also go to nearby cities such as Bern and Geneva, Lake Constance, the island of Mainau or the Rhine Falls.
