Thailand: Floating Houses on the Doi Tao and Pha Singh Leaw Sandstone Formations – VIDEO

Let's explore the other less known places of northern Thailand together. Mountains, lakes, jungles, sunken villages and excellent food. This time in the video and the story, we head south to Chiang Mai to the interesting sandstone formations and the Doi Tao Lake.

To the north and west of Chiang Mai's largest north-eastern city, you will find countless karst formations, including huge stalactite caves. To the south you can visit several unique rock formations of sandstone. Pha Singh Leaw near the town of Hot is one of them.

In the original sea sediments, due to wind and water, they formed huge columns, where you will be able to see the layers in which the sand settled. Unfortunately, it is difficult for them to get down, but along the perimeter of the surrounding rocks leads the way I recommend walking. You can also find here some rare plant species, which enjoy almost no nutrients in a dry sandy substrate. Especially in dry winter, the area is more like a semi-desert than a tropical zone.

Just a little further south, you will arrive at Doi Tao lake, which was created by the constant flooding of the original flooded area while building the Bhumibol dam downstream. The entire lake surrounds the beautiful mountains and I recommend either to the east or sunset to rent the boat and go to the center of the lake. Mainly Thai visitors stay on the lake overnight in rented floating homes.

From here, you can continue south to the Mae Ping National Park, such as one of the mountains, from which you have a beautiful view of the entire dam. Stop at Lake Kang Ko. At the same time, you can easily visit the Op Luang National Park near the town of Hot. Its biggest attraction is the impressive canyon of the Mae Chaem River, but you will also see several waterfalls, a cave and dab in the thermal springs. At the same time, you can go for a walk through the jungle, but you will be close to a safe road everytime.

Another way to connect is to travel to the highest mountain of Thailand, Doi Intahnon, and to the National Park of the same name we have already written about. A visit to Pha Sing Leaw sandstone means for you a 50-kilometer detour in both directions.

If you enjoy exploring places less crowded by tourists, then Pha Sing Leaw and Doi Tao are the places for you to be. Ideally you also see the Op Luang Park. All of these places are great places to spend a day in the surroundings of Chiang Mai.
