USA: Boston II – Places You Shouldn’t Miss

Published: 18.5.2013
Historical landmarks make Boston interesting, indeed, but there are other places one shouldn’t miss. Only then his/her visit will be complete. These places are charming and have their unique atmosphere. Despite thousands of tourists visit them every year, everyone can enjoy them.

Boston Common

Parks

Boston has many parks, you just look on a map a choose some of many greenery there. The Boston Public Garden is the most beautiful and most popular. It is located right by the Boston Common park . Thera are many pleasant places well-suited for romantic dates or picnics. The park has a large artificial lake across which goes a bridge and on the lake little swan-like boats floats on water. Flowers are regularly altered so even your 20th visit of this park wouldnt be boring. Also other parks offer pleasant seating. For example, Commonwealth Avenue that connects to the Public Garden. In the center lane of this wide street lined with red brick house sis a narrow park with high trees.

park Esplanade

Mostly in summer heat it is a great place to sit down in some cool shadow, the same applies for the Esplanadepark located along the river. There are many runners and bikers in this park and a bike route goes across bridges and tree alleys, it passes boat rentals and yachts as well as rower clubs. In windy weather, the river is overcrowded with yachts. The best way how to get to know parks in Boston is to rent a bike. There are public rental places where you can rent it for an hour or more. You have to just remember a password and then pick a bike using his password in any bike rental place. These places are spread across the whole city, even along “the Emerald Necklace,” it stands for a belt of parks connected to each other, it starts in the downtown and its length is more than 11 kilometers.

Beacon Hill

They say, if you haven’t seen Beacon Hill, you haven’t seen Boston. This district full of many picturesque streets lined with trees, brick houses and lit by gas lanterns. It has enchanting atmosphere. After few minutes there you will long to see more, to go around just other corner. Those who will explore this part of the city carefully will see blind lanes with old houses, former church rebuilt to a luxurious residence. Indeed, there live only those who have money, for example the present Secretary of State John Kerry has a house there.

Beacon Hill

Harvard and MIT

Boston is well known for its universities, among the most famous are Harvard and MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). You shouldn’t miss them. You will feel some of their great prestige, their genius loci where great ideas are born. Harvard is situated right by Harvard Square, a red line station. Local info office will provide you with maps of the whole campus which is overcrowded with tourists. Thus, it is good to get on the other bank of the river where the Baker Library and the faculty of economics are located. There are not tourists and these places are more beautiful then their counterparts on the other bank. There is peace and it is worth visiting particularly in summer. Buildings there are place in a nice park with rabbits running on its lawns. MIT is located further along the river and you should pick a map to orientate in an extensive campus. The Ray and Maria Stata Center is very interesting, it is situated in the northwestern part of the campus and it was planned by Frank Gehry, the architect who planned also the – autor Dancing House in Prague.
