USA, Idaho – Stanley
The best time to visit is said to be summer, specifically from July to September. However, outside the main summer season, there are fewer people here and in the winter you will most likely experience almost complete loneliness.
There are many trails that will take you to breathtaking places and even more breathtaking views. We highly recommend heading towards Sawtooth Lake. The whole route back and forth measures approximately 15 kilometers with an elevation gain of approximately 600 meters.
Sawtooth Lake is the largest lake in the surrounding national park and a major tourist attraction. On the north shore of the lake you can find Redfish Lake Lodge, which is a place where you can do various activities related to the lake. This cottage was built in the late 1920s and offers, among other things, accommodation. You can also rent a boat, go horseback riding or cross the lake on the ferry. In summer, you can relax on the sunny beach or rent a bicycle and explore the surroundings.
Hot springs are even more attractive. From the local treats, it is Sunbeam Hot Springs or, for example, Boat Box Hot Spring, which are the best. West of Stanley you will find natural places such as Bonneville and Kirkham Hot Springs.
Another activity we would like to recommend is the Salmon River. Nowhere else in Idaho will you enjoy water rafting like here. You can try rafting or board a boat with a guide who will tell you something about the surroundings and history.
If you fancy something more adventurous, then we recommend going out with nature with a backpack. Stanley is located at the border of three national parks with hundreds of trails. A popular route is the Alice-Toxaway Loop. Tourists usually divide this twenty-five-kilometer route between two and three days, because the elevation gain is almost 1000 meters.
If you go here in the winter, then a snow-covered landscape awaits you, where you can enjoy not only snowmobiling, but especially cross-country skiing. Particularly suitable are the Alturas Lake and Park Creek Ski Trails. Park Creek is located closer to the city and offers approximately 16 kilometers of groomed trails. Alturas Lake is a little further, about 35 kilometers south of the city. There are 16 kilometers of cross-country ski trails leading to Sawtooth Lake.
