Published: 6.3.2012
Prague's Charles Bridge is after the Písek one, the second oldest stone bridge in the Czech Republic. The unique monument registered on UNESCO World Heritage List will attract thousands of tourists daily. The atmosphere of love foreigners and fellow citizens are proud of this gem.

Tourists every day

It's half past seven in the morning and centuries old Charles Bridge is waking up to the next day.  In the mean time there walk just a few of passionate photographers, whose lenses morning dawn love, trampling several athletes - runners, and also those who are somehow prolonged their party. At the Charles Bridge, there are also orange cleaning squad, with their carts, one of the minima, which do not respect the ban on entry.

Just an hour and a half later a large group of Asians troops on the bridge. Their minuscule guide brisks pace and put in the "ancient lane" bisecting the river and arrayed thirty statues and sculptures, funny flashes his important umbrella. No stop near the Golden Cross, which grants wishes to wait, no deep impressions. Snap, snap. Asia has no time for the heart of Europe time that morning.

If Charles Bridge could, so he would probably just waved his hand over double - quick foreigners. He remembers lots of things over the years, what is there, in addition the necessary reconstruction and big floods, can´t be surprised by anything. Essential repair, which UNESCO designated as insensitive, crosses a bridge over the past five years. Conservationists should repair the Charles Bridge to 2020.

The foundation stone and eggs

The need to build a bridge brought a flood in 1342 that swept away the original Judith Bridge. The foundation stone of a new stone bridge King Charles IV., left to lay in 1357, exactly 9. 7. at 5.31 am.  Of course, the digits similarity is not coincidental. Number series, which are pyramid-shaped contact number nine, to the bridge should bring fame and long life. Well, today there is no doubt that Charles IV., then calculated flawless.

The building in which according to legend and adding raw eggs, oversaw a major architect Petr Parléř. The long bridge 515 and a wide nine and a half meters, but he was not even enough eggs throughout Prague. And so they came to help people from nearby Velvary. Fearing that the eggs not break on the way, they boiled them and transported to Prague as hard.

Mysterious or funny stories connected to the Charles Bridge, there are many. The truth is that the construction workers ended up in the 1402. It is hard to estimate, when then went into retirement, but it is clear that the productive life of one man did not cover the entire event. The work, according to archaeological surveys, Judith went over the bridge, respectively on his remains. Although he fell during a flood, but retained part of its structure and thus could at least serve as a wooden footbridge. When the Charles Bridge was completed, it seems the people of Prague had been knocked down.

Charles IV. even Petr Parléř couldn’t see the Charles Bridge completed.  Mysteries around the Judith Bridge helped to explain the floods in 2002, when the river bed a few meters deepened and archaeologists were able to examine if the technology used.

Four bridges gates, three towers

The part of the Judith Bridge was also one of the Lesser Town Bridge Towers, the smaller one. Reconstruction, which included an overall decline of the tower, passed in 1591. The larger and older tower of the reign of Jiří from Poděbrady interdisciplinary gate is connected from the early 15th century. On the other hand grips the Old Town Bridge Tower, whose lower part was completed during the life of Charles IV.

Bans of traffic people usually don’t respect. Perhaps no one, except cleaners with permission, anyone would not dare drive to the Charles Bridge. Although the year 1965 when the last car had passed, not so far away. Whole the transport chapter started in 1883 by horse tram. Catastrophic floods came to Prague in September 1890 and broke several bridge piers of Charles Bridge. Fix lasted only two years. In 1905, he chased after a tram bridge, which was later supplied by the little bit lighter buses.

On the Křižovnické Square with a statue of Charles IV., the Charles Bridge Museum is open every day.  There visitors can see among other things, a film about the history of Charles Bridge.
