Brno - Špilberk castle
Since middle of 14th century the castle became a centre of Moravian Margraves, especially under rule of Jan Henry Lucemburský and his first-born son Jošt. However, after his depth (1411) Špilberk lost his residential function and its military importance got ahead into foreground.
The castle was established in a Gothic style but undergone many changes within years. Today´s Gothic face of eastern wing was expressively supported with extensive reconstruction, effected during 1995-2000.
First written notices about Špilberk are of 1277. From King´s castle and seat of Moravian margraves became successively a big Baroque citadel which brought a fright. Špilberk was known as very apprehended jail, nicknamed as „ jail of nations“.
In Špilberk, you find many long and intricated corridors, known as casemates. Its original function – the magazine of military material - fulfilled till 1742. After that, the casemates became an afraid prison.
At present, Špilberk castle is a seat of Museum of town of Brno. In summer months, there are taken place in castle area various cultural events, castle courtyard revives with historical scenes or theatre performances.
