CZ, Kutna Hora: St Barbora's Church – A Sister of St Vitus Cathedral - VIDEO
Published: 13.4.2023
There are only a few cathedrals in the Czech Republic that can compete with Prague in their beauty. The Gothic temple of St. Barbora is one of them, the circumstances of the creation are, moreover, absolutely unique. Let's take a look at the cathedral now and then in the pictures and videos.

You can find the temple on a high rock spur over the Vrchlice River. It was left behind the town walls in the rivalry with Prague to build Kutna Hora townsmen, probably also to escape the influence of the Sedlec monastery. The construction started under the direction of the workshop of the architect of the St Vitus Cathedral of Peter Parler in 1388 and the work was carried out in several stages. The length of the main temple ship was supposed to be twice as high as today, but in 1558 the construction was, unfortunately, stopped, and the church builders closed the church's wall by a temporary well on the western side of the structure.

At the beginning of the seventeenth century, the burghers passed the church to the Jesuits, who built a dormitory next to it, and after the fire they made baroque modifications. Thanks to the local archeological association Vocel, however, the purist reconstruction took place between the years 1884 and 1905. At the same time, a new Neo-Gothic façade arose in the West.

One of the most interesting parts of the temple, apart from its distinctive external support system, is its vault. The choir is vaulted by a network vault, the main ship is a late Gothic, ribbed ribbed vault. The author was probably Benedikt Rejt.

Late Gothic frescoes with mining themes are also unique and can be found in several chapels. The coinage depicts the medieval mintage of silver coins on the walls. Perhaps the most interesting is the Smiskov chapel, where you can find typologically drawn scenes of famous scenes from the Old and New Testaments.

You may find the cathedral as well as the church in Sedlec and the and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kutna Hora, and it would be a great shame to visit the city. You will not regret the ridiculous price for a ticket.
