REGION OF VYSOČINA

The region of Vysočina is situated  along the border of Bohemia and Moravia. It is neighbouring with the Region of Pardubice, South Moravian Region, South Bohemian Region and Central Bohemian Region. It is one of three inland regions.

Havlíčkův Brod

The history of this town comes to the beginning of 13th century. The town is situated on Sázava-river surrrounded by beauties of Bohemia-Moravian Highlands. Havlíčkův Brod was an important district town.

At present, Havlíčkův Brod has approx. 25000 inhabitants. Since 1980 the town has a Protected Monumental Zone with more than one hundred monuments. You find here town´s city-walls with bastions, historical centre with a square in Baroque style, decorated churches, one of most attractive bells William and many others. A well-known Czech-citizen, Jára Cimrman, marked – as a centre of Europa just Havlíčkův Brod-not Prague. This town is connected with names of several  remarkable personalities - such as Josef Dobrovský, Bedřich Smetana, Jan Zrzavý and Karel Havlíček Borovský, his name keeps the town since 1945.

A sports ground Kotlina (Basin) including winter stadium, swimming pool with water attractions, sauna, fitcentre and squash hall was built for sports lovers. Anyway, the most attractive sport is an ice-hockey, the local natives made it famous all over the world.

For sports activities allures also the outskirts of Sázava river. Except of watermen, his targets are to be found by tourists and cyclists - for them is made a cycloroute along Sázava river from Davle up to Žďár nad Sázavou, passing Havlíčkův Brod.

Historical Monuments:

New Town Hall: it is of 13th century, in 15th century it was renovated and its Neo-Baroque  front-side was added in 1913. In 1891 the building was re-built in Neo-Baroque style and changed to a town hall.

Old Town Hall: originally late Gothic building rebuilt after a fire in 1662. The whole building was reconstructed in 1974, now it serves a regional library and for cultural purposes. In originally Gothic cellars you find a wine-cellar.

Havlíček House: In a square we find a house with a small toweer (No. 19), seat of district museum and a memorial of Karel Havlíček Borovský.

Plague Column: It is also named Virgin Mary Column, it is placed in the middle of the square. It is formed with a statue of Virgin Mary on a top and statues of St. Florian and St. John of Nepomuk on a stand. In a niche of a stand it is placed a small statue of St. Rosalia.

Church of Blessed Virgin Mary: it is situated in northeastern corner of a square and makes a dominante of town. Originally early Gothic construction was rebuilt several times. Here is places the most beautiful bell – William. You can admire the town with outskirts from the Church´s tower, accessible for public.

Statue of Karel Havlíček Borovský: forms a dominante of town´s park Budoucnost (Future). Its author, Bohumil Kafka, made it in 1924. Within the 2nd World War the statue was kept away and hidden. In 1946, when War was over, it was unveiled again, under presence of President Edvard Beneš.
