Pirna is such a gateway to Saxon Switzerland and is itself a great cruise destination. Its history dates back to prehistoric times, and it even belonged to the Bohemian Crown countries for one time. The most important monuments include the Baroque Church of the Virgin Mary, the Renaissance Town Hall with the Baroque Tower, the castle and chateau of Sonnestein, the Church of Sts. Henry and the Elbe promenade. From Pirna you can head to Dresden, the Königstein Rock Fortressor the Bastei Rock Bridge.
