Surinam - Omitted Country Of South America VI.
This noisy and rather chaotic metropolis, often known as „Parbo“, is situated on west bank of Surinam-river, near to its mouth. It is a mixture of European civilization and tropical America – imposant brick-bult buildings are changing with squares overgrown with grass and wooden buildings, narrow streets with palms, surrounded with mangrove copse around coastal belt.
Historical nucleus of this town is very picturesque, registered in UNESCO survey as unique example of mixture of Dutch, British, Creoles as well as Asiatic tradition, which were formed far from development sources of these cultures. So, original and very characteristic plan of building up of historical nucleus remains absolutely intact, but local urbanism gives it distinguished appearance. The Mosques and synagogues are placed close to each other, the dealers do their business with local wine or Dutch beer directly at bulding walls in British style, and inside numerous caffees and bars, traditional local rum is being sold.
In east direction from the square, Fort Zeelandia, perfectly restored coast citadel of 17th century, is placed. This fortification served, within military revolution within 20th century, as a jail for political prisoners. At present, you can find there Surinam Museum, containing big collection of historical and cultural subjects. Each first Sunday of the month, the performances of musical and dance groups, representing various Surinam nationalities, are taken place inside internal courtyard.
Near to the citadel, you can find St. Peter and Paul Roman-Catholic Church of 19th century. The construction is made completely from wood. Further, you can admire Protestant Church of 19th century, two synagogues, coming of 17th century, chemistry of 19th century as well as furrier´s workshop coming from the same time period, and library, containing interesting collections of old documents and books.
Central market place is to be found in Waterkant Street, passing along the coast from Presidential Palace up to ferry point, where the passangers are transferred to Mewerzog, opposite bank of Surinam-river. Nearby city centre, Kekemba relax resort is to be found.
A lot of beautiful places could be admired during navigation on Surinam-river, from Paramaribo up to Brokopondostuwmeer (Brokopondo), where you can see big water basin, protected with UNICEF, and further, the town of Malobbi. Close to this water reservoir, you can find Brownsberg National Park, small Mazaroni plain, including holiday resort of the same name, Iren and Leo Waterfalls, and small picturesque small town of Brownsweg.
