SR, Šintava: village connected with Váh - VIDEO
The village of Šintava is one of the oldest known localities in Slovakia and is mentioned as early as 1074 or 1042. Today we will go exploring it and we promise you that you will see only the corners that no tourist guidebook will tell you about.
We start on a slight elevation at the intersection of Nitrianská and Vinohradská Streets, where there is a four-sided brick building from the end of the 19th century called God's Torment. The upper part of the building is topped with a pyramidal canopy, under which there are four niches with pictures of saints.
We continue on and by the road towards Vinohrady nad Vah we see a wooden four-sided box (chapel) with a statue of St. Anthony of Padua on a metal pole. Gradually we pass the local cemetery, which is located on the northeastern edge of the village near the main road to Šoporňa and Šaľa. We stop in front of the house No. 220 (Dlouhá Street), where there is a classical Trinity Column from the second half of the 19th century. On the front side of the pedestal there is an arched niche with a statue of St. Vendelin. It is the largest small sacral cultural monument in Šintava.
Our next stop is the very centre of the village, which is the cobbled Peace Square. There is a reconstructed building of the fire station, in front of it in a decorative metal fence a stone cross with the Virgin Mary and the Crucified. In the second part of the square with park landscaping there is a playground for children and the Monument to the Fallen in World War II, dating from 1946. Interestingly, this monument was originally located in the town of Sereď.
Opposite the park is the Municipal Office, on whose façade is a commemorative plaque of the liberation of Šintava. The Baroque-Classical Roman Catholic Church of St. Martin from the second half of the 18th century, built on the site of an older church, with partially preserved masonry of an early Gothic church from around 1300, stands proudly nearby.
The secular temple acquired its present appearance after extensive reconstruction, during which its orientation was turned 180 degrees. On the wall of the church there is a Mission Cross and in front of it a nicely decorated Stone Cross.
In the village of Šintava you will also find the building of the former Mill, which today houses a company engaged in the production of agricultural products. Near the mill there is also a shop selling quality wine from Šintava vineyards.
Other landmarks of this Lower Považská village include the Monument to the Fallen Soviet Heroes at the end of Nitrianská Street or the restored roadside Chapel of the Virgin Mary with the sculpture of the Piety by the road (behind the village) towards Šoporňa and Šaľa.
There are many cultural and sporting events in the village over the year. In addition, Šintava abounds in beautiful nature. One of the most popular places is the Poronda locality with its ponds and a gravel lake (former dredging site).
Boaters will find themselves in the local harbour - a shipyard situated in the quiet environment of the Danube lowlands and used for relaxation and recreational sports mainly during the summer season. Finally, we cannot fail to mention the technical gem of the bridge from Sereď to Šintava, which is the first and last Czechoslovak pre-stressed segmental reinforced concrete bridge. It was put into operation in 1959.
Šintava is an attractive village for living, but also for relaxation in a clean environment with decent amenities, so be sure to visit it during your wanderings in the Trnava region.
