Lower Austria: The Most Beautiful Historic Sites
Published: 18.11.2015
The autumn is in its full swing. The weather is beautiful which inspired us to visit Lower Austria, a destination which encourages you to uncover its interesting history. There are some world’s most unique historical sights, Schloss Hof included, we will take a look at it in the following lines
Not so long ago we visited men-only cloister of Klosterneuburg, which has been for 900 years the most precious of sacral art in Austria. You can learn about this priceless sight at various tours. Klosterneuburg is also the wine-making residence in Austria. There are many baroque wine cellars. The most interesting part about the cloister is the treasure room which holds the crown of Archduchy of Austria. Various events, like wine-tasting, take place at the cloister. It really would be a pity not to visit the place.
Rosenburg is a renaissance chateau near Horn town. The town has a medieval center, beautiful renaissance arcades, thirteen towers, and impressive courtyard. The architecture is a perfect example of a fortress that had been gradually developed across centuries. You don’t need to take a tour. An audio guide is available for download so while on your way you can get an idea how the life must have looked like, how people lived in different chambers today exposing the then furniture and weapons, or metal things of daily usage. Perfectly maintained gardens around the chateau put more magic to the atmposhere.
Should Rosenburg chateau be too far for you then go to one of the most opulent noble residences in all the Habsburg lands- Hof. Representational rooms, or prince Eugene of Savoy’s and Empress Maria Theresa’s private chambers are open for you to see. Another thing there would be fabulous baroque garden divided across four terraces. Farmstead of Meierhof is another part of the compound that you can visit.
Should you like castles, then don’t miss the ruin of Aggstein looming at 300 meters above the Danube. The Kuenrings, a noble family, lived there in the 12th century. In the 15th century, some bandit knights dwelled in there. Legends surround Aggstein which boasts on its “rose garden”. A reward for your troubles when climbing up to this “eagle’s nest” is a wonderful view of the surroundings. An exhibition on the Nibelungs is open for you to expland your knowledge. Or you can have some true knights feast at the castle restaurant.
Lastly, we would like to tell you about newly renovated charterhouse in Gaming town (Central Europe’s largest and one of the oldest). The Carthusian monks had lived there over 454 years. They were called “white monks”. Also, it was the spiritual center in the region and one of the richest monasteries in Austria. Another impressive sight is a church, baroque library with Wenzel Lorenz Reiner’s frescoes, or a prelate hall roofed by impressive stucco ceiling.
A tour at Heiligenkreuz Abbey is another interesting stop for Heiligenkreuz is the oldest Cistercian monastery in Austria. Located in the south of Wienerwald just 15 kilometers from Vienna, the monastery was founded in 1133. It is a unique work of architecture. The monks from the abbey became world famous in 2008 with their Greogorian Choir (CD „Chant – Music for Paradise“).
We hope we inspire you to visit some of Lower Austria’s most beautiful historical sites. You will have some wonderful time especially in this season.

It is also a time of winter holidays in the mountains, meeting with friends over a glass of mulled wine or it is a time of a great cabbage soup, which will warm you up in this season.
