Croatia, Zadar – The Capital of Northern Dalmatia

Maybe you remember some of our old articles where we mention Peter Kresimir who founded the town of Sibenik. This very ruler annexed Zadar and made it Croatian. After his death the town became a part of the new Hungarian-Croatian kingdom. It was between the 11th and 14th century when the city experienced its peak. Churches, palaces, and public structures had bene built. At the end of the 14th century, the very first Croatia university was founded.
Like other Croatian cities, Zadar also had been long centuries under Venice. So what makes it unique? Josip Juraj Dalmatinac, the most famous Croatian artist was born here. He authered the Cathedral of St Jacob in Sibenik and many other structures.
From the coastline we walk through one of the gates and we head towards Narodni Trg square. Juraja Barakaovica street which we walk down turns out great choice for there a new large visitors' center was open. It provides tourists with all the important informatio and a great map giving a great overview of the city. This square enchanted us right away. Gradska Loza and Town Guardhouse are among the most important sights there.
Surrounded by the wall you can can enter the city center through several gates. The greates historic importance is enjoyed by Kopena Vrata constructed in the 16th century by the famous Venetian architect Sanmicheli. We confirm that it is trully amazing as many book guides claim.
We are approaching yet another local sight – the Sea Organ. The history of the organ is quite new. It was finished only in 2005. This "musical instrument" is trully unique. The
waves make the music by way of sea waves. We are not the only ones who sit there and listen to enchanting tones.
As we are short on time, we head back to the city to see St Donatus church and the Romanesque cathedral of St Anastasia. The viasta over the city up from the belfry is a sight to enjoy. But this is trully it. Other interesting Croatian cities are a matter of some other time.
I hope our trips will inspire you to travel to Croatia, the country which is the best you can get on your vacation.
