SK: Western Tatras – Up to the Summit of Ostry Rohac
The Western Tatras is very popular and frequented mountain range. Treks here, the main ridge especially, are amazing and people who go there long remember it. Ostry Rohac is perhaps the most attractive and most well known peak in this area. Many tourists hike across it every year.
Western Tatras – Enchanting Mountain Range
There are many oportunities to enjoy the Western Tatras. A visitor can choose from many marked tourist trails of various difficulty. Easy trails usually go in valley – for instance through Ziarska valley to Ziarska cabin or across Rohace valley to the Rohace lakes. True mountaineers would surely appreciate longer and more difficult treks, treks which could easily take you a day to complete their individual sections and which go across exposed peaks of the Western Tatra's main ridge. Even thou the Western Tatras are much lower mountain range compared to the High Tatras. However, one should not underestimate difficulty of treks here, even though summits are less exposed and more covered with grass. Relatively easy to access main ridge is very attractive for tourists. There is a marked tourist trail which starts off on Babky summit, stretches across the Rohace to the Polish border. Then the trail runs east to Pysne lake. Rohace, a quiant and fascinating nook of the Western Tatras, is also very frequented. It charms every tourist.
Across Rohace Valley
The best way to start your climb up the summit of Ostry Rohac is in Rohace valley; either at Sindlovec cabin. There is parking lot where you can leave your car and go on a day-long trek in Pod Spalenou locality.
We join the red tourist trail, follow asphalt road which crosses long Rohace valley and goes mildly uphill. The trail edn at Tatliakova cabin. We turn to the green trail going uphill. The road goes across forest. Soon we encounter dwarf mountain pines. Eventualy we reach Zabrat saddle. The vista over the Rohace ridge is amazing. We could easily recognize its individual peak. By followin the yellow tourist trail we are headed to Rakona (1 876 m) on the Polish border. Even this peak offers amazing vistas over surrounding peaks of the Rohace, Rohace valley, and projection of the Tatras in Poland. We join the blue tourist trail and climb up to Volovec (2 063 m). The summit is an amazing outlook. You can see Rohace valley, the peaks of the Rohace, Rohace lakes, and the entire western section of the Western Tatras.
On Ostry Rohac's Exposed Ridge
Upon short rest we continue hiking along the red tourist trail to Ostry Rohac. The mountain is situated just before us. We feel awe when seeing its steep rocky slopes. Slowly we descend to Jamnicke saddle upon which we go uphill again. The trail ascends steeply. Soon we find ourselves on steep rocky terrain. To go further on we need to use our hands. Sort of easy climbing. There are even more difficult sections wehre we need to use chains attached to Ostry Rohac. Crossing these sections is adrenaline experience. Your walk must be firm and you should be resistant to vertigo. Upon strenous climb we eventually find ourselves on the peak of Ostry Rohac (2 088 m). The vista from the top over the vast mountainous landscape of the Western Tatras leave us with deep impressions. Mountains in our vicinity also caught our attention – Placliva (2 125 m), Volovec (2 063 m) which is covered with grass, majestic Baranec (2 184 m) or the peak down to impressive Smutna valley.
Ostry Rohac is a symbol of the Rohace region. It is a beautiful mountain. Its sharp shape earned it the nickname of "Slovakian Matterhorn". The climb is strenous, true. You need to be physically fit. However, it's worth effort because you will long remember this experience in harsh yet amazing nature of the Western Tatras.

Yet any tour along their ridges, into their klippes or climbs up Rohace's exposed ridge are worth it. However, you may make here an easy tour as well particularly to Preduvratie klippe.
The Western Tatras are the most beautiful and most charming in autumn - when the grassy slopes of the ridges and moutains as well as the trees are painted in bright shades of brown, yellow-brown and reddish-brown. In this article, we will introduce the transition of the autumn Alpine landscape, our goal will be the highest mountain of the Western Tatras - Bystra mountain.
Tourism in the Western Tatras is very popular. This mountain range owes its attractiveness to the possibility of completing beautiful ridge trekking paths with individual hills. The winter in the Tatras is in full swing and we would like to present you a very interesting publication that captures the complete crossing of the ridge of the High Tatras in winter conditions. And without leaving out heavy climbing peaks or entire ridge sections (in 1974).
The Western Tatras are a magical mountain range that offers many outdoor activities to lovers of outdoor activities. Hiking and more and more popular skialpinist tours can only be done in certain areas of the mountain range. An interesting locality that can be visited in winter is the Holy Hill.
Recently, a practical book re-edition of tourist guides with a backpack around Slovakia from the family publishing house Dajama saw the light of day. In addition to attractive tourist destinations, it also brings tourist maps.
There is something about making winter treks. Harsh, icy beauty of nature in winter tempts many people to set out to nature. We can make some more difficult trips even in Slovakian mountains, concretely in the Low Tatras, Western Tatras, and High Tatras. Placlivy mountain in the Western Tatras, is a locality accessible to tourist even during the winter season.
Skialpinism has becoming increasingly popular. Hence we became interested in a relatively new book which contains a selection of the best skialpine rides in the mountains of Slovakia.
This time we visit West Tatra Mounains, 10 kilometers northeast of Liptovsky Mikulas. There we visit the quiant town of Ziar.
Not far away from Liptovský Hrádok is situated the newest and the most visited nature museum in Slovakia – Liptov Village Museum in Pribylina. We have already written something about this museum, however, we will look more in detail on its static exposition of a former Povážská Forest Railroad (Považská lesná železnica).
Today we move from the High Tatras to Western Tatras where we visit Žiarska valley where popular Žiarska Cottage is located (1324 meters above the sea level). This position is a great starting point for any trek to the regions of Braníkov and Barance.
Like the High Tatra West Tatra is also popular area. You can have some remarkable outdoor experience there. Both mountains seems to be one whole. However, unlike the High Tatra, West Tatra are lower. Its mountains are more covered of grass. Barance mountain (2 185 m) is a popular locality by tourists. This mountain is situated in the south of this mountain ridge.
After visiting many places we return to nature today. Our steps lead us to beautiful, untamed, and unique Western Tatras, concretely to the Rohace.

Vysoke Tatra sis one of the most beautiful nature gems in Slovakia. These high mountains lure tourists for their grandiosity, monumentality and immesurable beauty of their deep valleys and sharp pyramidal peaks reaching up to the skies. Jehneci pyramidal peak (2 230 m) one of the accessible summits in the High Tatras. The climb is amazing and valuable experience.
Autumn is the most colorful season of the year and the best for tourism. You need to count on early sunsets but the sun is not so hot. Therefore, we decided to go up into the mountains.
The ski season is on and this year’s winter is not only rich on snow but also many beautiful sunny days. So as soon as we had a free weekend we moved off to nature at least for few days. Our steps led to Orava, one of the most beautiful regions in Slovakia.
Do you belong among winter sports lovers? Also, you can not imagine a winter holiday without a good snow and well-maintained slopes? Although, I have to admit that in recent years we go with a group on skiing for one week. Usually, we go abroad, but the Slovak mountains, we did not forgot about. My favorite places have been for years the Kysuce and Orava regions.
If you will travel through north road-line from west to the east of Slovakia (or vice versa) and will not be in a hurry, and would like to reflect on, which sightseeings will be worth to visit (or where you wish to have a rest for relax), so we have one reference for you: would you leave the highway at exit Liptovsky Hrádok and drive in direction to Pribylina.
