CZ, Mutěnice: Largest Wine-Growing Town in the Heart of Moravia

Published: 4.4.2024
Mutěnice (Mutenitz in German) is a village in the South Moravian Region in the district of Hodonín. They are about 10 kilometers away from the district town of Hodonín, to the northwest. Mutěnice has over 3,700 inhabitants and the cadastral area of the village is approximately 3,237 hectares. The Mutěnický stream flows through the village. The village is located at an altitude of 170-265 meters above sea level.

This village is famous for growing vines. Mutěnice is therefore a frequent destination of wine tourism, it is located in the Slovácko wine-growing sub-region (the so-called vineyard routes are - the most famous are Mutěnská hora and Dubňanská hora, Vyšicko, Úlehle and Hraničky). The Mutěnice wine trail passes through the village.

Because it is a village located in southern Moravia, it is one of the warmest areas in the Czech Republic. The number of summer days (that is, days when temperatures reach 25 degrees) is usually more than 50 per year. Data on the length of annual sunshine are also favorable. From these several mentioned data it follows that mutěnice vineyards have very favorable growing and climatic conditions for their development and growth. But it is also necessary to mention that some localities have better conditions, others may be slightly worse, but this does not change the global assessment of the territory.

The Mutěnice vineyard cadastre is very fragmented, and therefore it is divided into a total of 13 vineyard routes, which have their official names, as some have already been mentioned above. The vineyard cadastre itself has an area of about 581 hectares, of which more than 150 hectares are currently planted with noble vines. As the demand for wine increases every year, the area of Mutěnice vineyards is constantly increasing. The varietal arrangement of vineyards is quite diverse.

A rarity of the largest wine-growing village in the Slovácko region is Búdy, it is a large area with around 500 wine cellars. Some of them are also beautifully decorated on the outside with typical Slovácko paintings. When you walk through the romantic streets there, their atmosphere will fully engulf you.

There are countless attractions and trips in Mutěnice and its surroundings. You can visit the Vyšicko lookout tower, which was opened in 2018. It is located on the highest point of Mutěnice - the Vyšicko hill. The lookout tower has the shape of a triangular floor plan, is largely wooden and has 12 meters. It offers beautiful views of the picturesque vineyards and the surroundings of the wine village Mutěnice, with good visibility you can see even the White Carpathians, Chřiby with Buchlov and even Pálava. You can also admire the beauty of the ponds, which once belonged to the largest in Moravia. Dozens of water areas in Mutěnice form a recreational area suitable for relaxation and rest. And last but not least, you can visit the church of St. Catherine, which was built in 1769 by Empress Maria Theresa, on the site of a dilapidated chapel.
