Thailand: Unique Stone Formations of Lan Hin Taek on a Tabletop Mountain – VIDEO

Published: 23.9.2023
Approximately 450 kilometers north of Bangkok you will find several unique table mountains, most of which protect national parks. One of the most interesting is Phu Hin Rong Kla, predominantly in the Phitsanulok province. Here you will find the unique rock formations of Lan Hin Taek, to which we are now going together.

The path to the National Park begins with a steep climb from the vast lowlands that stretch from here to Bangkok. Gradually cool down, changing the surrounding forest and opening far-flung views. After a few miles you will arrive at the former military base, where you will find a camp and several chalets to sleep. And from there you can also walk down the stone plains to a less than 1 km long trail.

Nobody knows exactly how unusual rock formations in Lan Hin Taek were created. The continuous surface of the rock suddenly begins to disturb several meters of deep furrows and cracks. Moreover, on the surface, due to erosion, there were shapes that resemble the stone miniature of the hilly landscape.

The trail will gradually lead you through several wooden crawls that cross the cracks to the beautiful view where the jungle extends below you and you will see far into the lowland and some of the surrounding hills. The most beautiful is the sunset from here, but it fascinated me over the day.

Interesting is the history of the area. In the second half of the 20th century, the table mountain served as one of the Thai Communist Party's sanctuaries that led a protracted guerrilla war with the government. That's why, unfortunately, you will not see any big wild animals today. On the other hand, you can see the original fortifications or anti-aircraft guns at several locations within the National Park.

The most exciting excursion to history and other unusual stone formations and beautiful prospects offers a trail through Lan Hin Pum just a few kilometers away. On the way through the park you can also stop at several waterfalls.

The park is the easiest to reach from town of Phitsanulok. Either get off from Bangkok or use the train from both Bangkok and Chiang Mai. You need to rent a car or motorbike for the next trip. The possibility of getting to the park by public transport was unfortunately not found. If you are afraid to drive in Thailand, you will usually get the car and the driver at reasonable prices. The entrance to the park is unfortunately one of the higher. But if you want to go to the tourists of almost undiscovered areas of the country, I can definitely recommend this part.

The climate in the mountains in the north of Thailand is very different to the south of the country. Mountains usually rise as high as 1500 meters. Temperatures can easily drop below 10 degrees Celsius in winter. That's why strawberries are grown here, for instance. The mountain climate is great for high-quality arabica coffee as well. About 50 kilometers from Chiang Mai town, there is a coffee plantation I went to visit. It was there where I finally realized how much work is behind one simple cup of coffee.
