Thailand: Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park – VIDEO

The national park is situated along the border with the Burmese state of Shan and is close to the town of Fang. Bus is the easiest way of transport from Chiang Mai. Once you reach the place, to have a bike or a scooter is almost a must. However, you can rent an offroad with a driver. Alternatively you can take some local pickup from Fang which could take you to the edge of the park. There take some of the suggestet trails through the park but bear in mind that you will sweat a lot. The highest mountian in the park is also Thailand's second highest mountain with its almost 2300 meters. You start at the altitude of 600 meters above sea level.

The climb is worth the effort. Sunsets as observed from the highest ridge was one of the best experiences I had enjoyed during my half a year in Thailand. Should oyu come in winter and you stay over night on the ridge (you need your own tent and quite a warm sleeping bag) than morning sea of fog and the mountain peaks rising above it will be something you won't forget. Many of the peaks are in Burma. If you don't want to take a walk you can ride to the very top by car.

It is possible to stay over night at some of the local camps situated near the visitor's center. Tents are rented for affordable prices and the same goes for all the necessary equipment.

Next to the mountains and beautiful nature there are several great mountain springs and the highest Thai geyser. It sprinks water up to 30 meters every half an hour. Hot water creates a view which is hard to forget. Sink your feet at some of thermal springs or maybe cook eggs which you can buy right next to them.

And what is teh best thing about it? It is very unlikely that you would meet anyone in the park. Tourists don't visit the park often even though it is easy to get to. This results in very affordable prices in the area. A nice room in Fang can cost as low as 10 dollars.
