Thailand, Thaton: Forgotten Town in the Shadow of Beautiful Mountains – VIDEO

In the very north of Thailand, there is the town of Thaton laying on the River Kok. The river flows here from Burma. It flows at the edge of Doi Pha Hom Pok National Pakr. Then, between the mountains it runs to Chiang Rai, and then to the borderline with Laos where it flows into the Mekong. If you are one for some adventure, take a small boat from Chiang Rai to Thaton. The journey is great. It is an adventure which can continue in Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park.

Let's start in the city alone. At first, it doesn't look like anything interesting. Ther are no wild night parties, or amazing cuisine – however, on the closer look the city gets more interesting. There is a Buddhist stupa. There you can see a small museum. At the museum, there is a observation platform with amazing vista over the landscape. You will see the Kok River winding through the valley to Chian Rai. What you will see are hundreds upon hundreds rice fields, and amazing mountains. I recommend to go there at the sunset.

Thaton will be great base for trips to the northern part of Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park There is Thailand's second highest mountain, and the largest geyser in the country. To get around in the park, you can rent a bike, a four by four offroad, or simply walk. There are amazing vstas to see, villages and its amazing and friendly villagers unaffected by globalization. small Buddhist temples, and wild nature.

When you are lucky you can see abandoned buildings of Thai borderline fortification. You can see those for free. Today, the area is secure. Before, however, the borderline with Burma had to be guarded. It is possible that you encounter some military patrols. Don't be scared about them. They control illigal imigrants, and they work against drug smuggling because drugs are smuggled here from Myanmar across the mountains. Well, if someone tells you to not to go to some area, just don't. If you do, soldiers will reach you. If they see you are a tourist, they let you go.

It would be fair to mention that even travellers who don't seek adventure can get there easily. Regular bus lines departing from Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, or you can travel there by scooter in one day from both towns.

In the north of Thailand, tourists are not everywhere. For now. So here you can enjoy Asia as it trully is, and you will have amazing experiences.

The climate in the mountains in the north of Thailand is very different to the south of the country. Mountains usually rise as high as 1500 meters. Temperatures can easily drop below 10 degrees Celsius in winter. That's why strawberries are grown here, for instance. The mountain climate is great for high-quality arabica coffee as well. About 50 kilometers from Chiang Mai town, there is a coffee plantation I went to visit. It was there where I finally realized how much work is behind one simple cup of coffee.
