Nevertheless there are several trails available to tourists in winter in the area of the Tatranian National Park mají návštěvníci k dispozici několik krásných tras a okruhů.
Mengusovska Valley – the Gem of the High Tatras
Mengusovska valley is well-known to anyone who likes alpine tourism and especially the High Tatras. This is a very beautiful place in the Tatranian National Park. Mengusovska valley is 8 kilometers long, it stretches from Strbske Lake to High Tatra's main ridge. By Popradske Lake it splits towards northeast and makes Zlomiskova valley. In Mengusovska valley, there are many large and small lakes the most famous one being Popradske Lake or Velke Hincovo Lake – this is the largest and deepest lake in the High Tatras in Slovakia. Mengusovska valley is open to tourists during the winter in the area stretching from Strbske Lake Nad Zabím Potokem signpost.
Easy Trek to Popradske Lake
Three marked trails run to Popradske Lake from the south – the red, the green, and the blue one. The red trail is our choice. We start at Strbske Lake and go to forest while going mildly uphill. On our left, there is a spectacular vista overe Mlynicka Valley and Predni Solisko (2 117 m). Then we go through forest until we get to Trigano signpost. Few minutes of the walk on we start to enjoy vistas over Mengusovska a Zlomisovska valley. Moreover, we also see Ostrvy mountain (1 984 m). We go on, enter the forest and eventually reach Popradske Lake. At some of the local cabins – Majlathova cabin or the cabin at Popradske lake. In these cabins you may have some warm food and beverage.
Trip for Demanding Tourists – To Sedlo pod Ostrvou
More physically capable and more experienced tourists can leave Podtatranske lake by following the red tourist trail and hike up to Sedlo pod Ostrvou (1 966 m). The trail goes up steep slope – it is recommended to undertake this trail only in good weather conditions and in low avalanche danger if there is snow. Moreover, it is also recommended to have climbing equipment with you – stick, crampons, and ice axe. We reach our goal upon strenous climb. If you find yourselves with enough spare time on your hands, you may go further on by following Tatranska Magistrala to Slezsky Dum. The vista down Mengusovska valley and surrounding mountains is perfect. We highly recommend you to undertake a winter hike to Sedlo pod Ostrvou.
Regardless if you visit Mengus valley during the summer season or in winter, it is interesting in any season of the year. This mountianous piece of nature seems magical, mysterious, harsh and fragile at the same time in any time of the year. The sound of silence hovering above Mengusovska is really captivating.
