REGION OF PILSEN

You find this region on South-west of the country. There are missing the towns of medium greatness here, therefore the natural centre of all concentration in the region there is the town of Pilsen, well-known throughout the world with its  production of beer.

If you go to Castle Radyne, which is located near the town of Pilsen, you will climb up to an altitude of 567 meters above sea level. On the top of the castle tower you will enjoy the vista to the wide area of the Pilsen region. Radyne was built under the reign of Charles IV in the middle of the 14th century, approximately between the years 1356 and 1361.

In today's article we will introduce a beautiful hunting chateau, which is located in a place that is told a very untraditional reputation. The original name of the castle was Waldschloss, but long time ago the Slavs at the time of the Spring equinox regularly sacrificed in these places a male goat because they hoped to make their gods and a good harvest. The truth of the legend is evidenced by numerous archaeological findings. In later years the name of the castle changed to Kozel (male goat).

Near Pilsen, in the small town of Plasy, there is a cistercian monastery founded by Vladislav II. In 1421, however, the Hussites burned it down. The Baroque appearance of the monastery and adjacent buildings is the work of the architects Jan Blazej Santini-Aichel and Jean Baptist Mathey, who from 1661 to 1739 led the rebuilding works of the monastery to the form we may see today.

Pilsen has buttressed its art scene since the Middlge-Ages as suggest its Gothic structures, Renaissance houses, modern architecture etc. The landmarks are mostly within city's historical core. I would like to present you a true gem of Pilsen's architecture today. One doesn't necessarily notice it right away for house decor is not within our eye sights. Locals often don't know that they pass by works of art. Today, we take a closer look at sgraffiti by Mikolas Ales, an exceptional Czech graphic artist, illustrator, and painter of Czech history.

Should you happen to be in Pilsen near city center and you will be looking for Republika square, raise your head and look around! You will see the belfry of St Bartholomew's cathedral. Situated in the center of the square with its 102.6 meters, it is the tallest church tower in the Czech Republic. At 60 meters above the ground, there is a gallery from where visitors may take a look around over the city.
