Published: 19.4.2017
Over 4200 kilometers of cycling trail, eight top-notch trails with well thought out infrastructure, themed cycling regions, radial cycling trails, new bike parks, trails, and family cycling trails. This all can be found in Lower Austria.

No other Central European country offers so much for bicyclers as Lower Austria. Thanks to this you can expore the world from your bike. Many trails lead you far away from civilization. There are also many mountain trails which are well marked, conjoined , and service facilities are strategically placed along it. Bicycle maps give overviews and advice and the same is to be found on the official website of this Austrian republic here HERE.

There are new trails being opened this season as well as new services on offer and new target groups. New completed projects brings Lower Austria cycling to a new level. Ybbstalradweg and Thayarunde trails were added new and attractive sections. Popular cycling trails following the river or former railroad give cyclers great experience. No going uphill, secure trails, many opportunities to stop and take a swim, and Lake Lunz. By the latter you can enjoy great time of rest.

Ybbstalradweg trail gives cyclers new section situated between the towns of Waidhofen an der Ybbs and Lunz am See. The section follows former railroad of Ybbstalbahn. The new are is secure, well marked, and an example of Austrian cycling trails. You can ride the new section between the towns of Lunz and St. Georgen am Reith this year. The trail between the towns of Lunz and Waidhofen is 55 kilometers in lenght. It will be open in mid-June 2017.

Once it is finished, you can ride your bikes along romantic arch bridges, through a short tunnel, or ride wild gorge. Also, sand beaches are waiting for you to enjoy sun and clear water. In addition, you will encounter smiths. Anytime you can make a stop according to your wish.

The last section of Thayarunde, a 111 kilometer trail stretching along former rails tracks of Waidhofen-Slavonice and Göpfritz-Raabs. The tracks are interconnected by not much frequented roads and trials. Two top trails partially touch these. EuroVelo 13 (Iron Curtain Trail) and Kamp - Dyje - Morava cycling trail. The latter has been vastly modernized in recent yars. It received new asphalt surface, many dangerous places were removed, and markers were optimalized. This made it better suited for cyclers.

Should you desire adventure, follow this extraordinary trail with tunnels along it called Türnitzer Bahnradweg. The trail is 9 km long (18 km there and back). It takes you to Prinztaltunnel (133 m), Moosbach Tunnel (32 m), and Dickenauer Tunnel (155 m). The light at the end of the tunnel is your reward. Once you reached Türniz town, there is a large children playground, bobsleigh track Eibl-Jet, and a bio-pool resort with three pools, sandpit, and beach volleybal court.

Families with children are recommended to use Traisental cycling trail. It is 111 kilometers long split into 4 sections The most beautiful section is Danube - St. Aegyd. You mostly ride down the stream. Be sure to visit Stift Herzogenburg abbey, the first camel theater, and a zoo with white tigers (Kameltheater Kernhof mit weißem Zoo).

Wienerwald, (c) Roman Seidl

Another trail you should try is - Danube cycling trail, or the so called radial cycling trails. There is a central point from which you set off with light baggage to a multiple day trip to the surroundings. These central places give the trails variety. For instnace, trails run radially along the Danube from Marbach town. Visitors can explore the wine growing area around retz town. The main feature around Gmünd town are marshlands and forests. When travelling from Baden you can explore cultural sights in Wienerwald. And you can cross hills in the Bucklige Welt region.

This is hardly all cyclers can experience in Lower Austria. Go and find new experiences for yourselves!
