Lower Austria: Mitterbach - A Picturesque Locality
Mitterbach is a small village situated in charming nature, in Federative County of Lower Austria. The visitors from Slovakia as well as from the Czech Republic discover this community again, not only for its position, deep in the nature, rather easy accessibility and good transport connection, but also for many sightseeings and places of interest
in the outskirts.
The community offers also sufficiently wide spectrum of free time (leasure) activities, provided you are looking for active relax in a form of touring, cycling, skiing or if you prefer idling, connected, for instance, with sauna visit or relax in some of many meadows around. Anyway, if you visit this area, it is a must to taste local excellent kitchen. To tell the truth, it is not of diet type, but, small walk in fresh mountanin air will help you that you would not grow fat, for sure! So, you can find there several small hotels, family lodges or traditional Austrian „Gasthofs“, offering really delicacies at reasonable prices. I personally visited some of them and I can say that no disappointment was for me in this respect.
Mitterbach is a village in Federative County Lower Austria, quarter Mostviertel, nearly at the border with Federative County of Styria, not far distant from Mariazell, most popular shrine of Central Europe.
Relax in the Environs
With its position, the locality is predestinated for agro-tourist activities. Many of local farms(where richly blowing nutmegs cannot be missed) were changed into family boarding houses, which offer, except accommodation and board, the possibility to look at life course of standard Austrian farmers. You can see there, except traditional agricultural animals, so called long-fur cows, rather non-typical for us. If you love the horses, there is no lack of such animals. Apart of this, Mitterbach is popular among paragliding confessors. It is adrenalin sporting activity, where you fly with paragliding wings (glider), by means of start downstairs from the hill or even from the plain, but by means of towing device in such case. Direct above the community, marvellous hill of Gemeindealpe is rising. From hill top (two seat wire-rope railways will take you upstairs) you can enjoy phantastic panoramatic outlook towards wide environs of Voralpen. You can undertake marvellous and pleasant wanderings towards Vorderotscher, via Otschergraben up to Erlaufklause or Wienerbruck. Your return way could be changed by local train (Mariazellbahn). In the course of your wanderings, you can meet many shelters, challets or pubs, where you can take the accommodation or refreshment at least. At slopes of Gemeindealpe, ski resort is in operation during winter months. Its name joints the name of the hill with a name of Mitterbach village, and you can find there lower station of seat rope railway. From the altidute of 1626 metres, down to valley station (800 m), all lovers of winter sports are temptated by descent routes, excellently arranged. The altitude is not too high, but you can do skiing activities there till the beginning of spring. The resort takes the advantage of artificial snow covering, except natural snow covering. It is an interesting fact: you can find there the longest consistent family ski descent route in Lower Austria (from the top to the valley, it is 7 kilometres long).
Not far from Mitterbach, at the border between Styria and Lower Austria, in north-west direction, only four kilometres from Mariazell-shrine, in an altitude of 827 metres above sea level, the glacier Erlaufsee Lake is to be found. The lake is approx. 1,5 kilometres long and max. 500 metres wide. Its depth makes nearly 38 metres. The lake surface presents approx. 0,58 square kilometres, and contains approx. 12 400 000 cubic metres of the water. The tourists visit this mountain lake all year round. The lake has transparently pure water, and offers wide possibilities for spending of leasure time. So, in summer, water surface is used for bathing, fishing or diving. You can also lease the boats (treadle, with paddles and with motor). You have the chance to navigate the boat, and enjoy picturesque environs around. Moreover, tourist path is leading around the whole lake. In winter, the lake is freezing over quickly, as it is situated (at low sunshine) in a shadow of surrounding hills, and so, the surface is fully used by skating lovers, on an ice in free nature. Apart of this, you can meet there the divers, who are training the draughts below the ice.
