Lower Austria: Unique Places and Wild Summer Nature
Summer is for tourism and extraordinary experiences. Recently we have visited Lower Austria. There we had a multiple-days trip and also hikes along historical trails. We learned about wild nature and on the following lines we tell you more about our journey, perhaps even inspire you to do some.
We chose Ötscher natural park known also as the “Austrian Grand Canyon as the point of start in our trip in Austria. Between individual points of interest, we moved by Mariazell railroad or afoot. We discovered there crystal clear waterfalls, tourist trails leading to, for instance, Ötscherhias cottage. We refreshed ourselves there and enjoyed beauty of a vista. Next we headed for the oldest water power plant Wienerbruck which supplies the aforementioned railway with electricity. We also visited romantic Ötschergräben gorge. Once narrow creeks and small rivers ran through limestone massif. Deep gorges and rock formations is what is left of them.
Another point of interest is Hochreit plateau. There we observed vast landscape and fascinating 300-year farm Ablass. It is located right in the middle of nature reservation. We couldn’t miss it. We also enjoyed some local food delicacies and visited a zoo for children. Later we went on a themed trail that took us across one of the last plateau peat bogs in Europe called Leckermoor. The peat bog is a home to many endangered fauna and flora species. We have seen Proclossiana eunomia which is what remained from the last ice age. There is also an untouched peat moss.
On the following day, our trip started at a historical train station. It is located in beautiful fresh summer city of Payerbach. We followed the green trail going surrounded with the Vienna Alps. It got us to Jubiläumswarte tower. The vista showed us a 150 years old world cultural heritage – the Semmerin railway. An interesting fact is that the world’s first alpine railway is 41 kilometers long. There are 16 viaducts, 15 tunnels and 100 bricked arched bridges.
Partially we also climbed the „Welterbesteig Wachau“ trail. It goes through the land of wine and peaches. 180-kilometer trail connects 13 towns of Wachau territory – the land of UNESCO. The trail gets you to 20 castles and chateaus, three monasteries, and it will take you through fascinating land around the river and its trails and steep vineyards. The whole trail has 14 parts. We climbed only three of them.
This is only a tiny fragment of what we have experienced. Lower Austria has more than 15000 km of tourist trails. It is not easy to choose as everyone of us has different preferences. Therefore, we spent some time on the internet where we found a great guide with maps. You can download it right HERE.
We will return to Lower Austria this year. That’s certain. We firmly believe that we inspire you to visit our neighbors and that we also give you some tips how to spend hot summer days.
