Bike Trip: Petrzalka - Wolfsthal
Bike – a simple machine on two wheels; we decided to use it during our summer vacation to explore beauties of nature, history of various places and last but not least to get fitter. Come with us to this unusual bike trip, which starts at the largest housing development, Petrzalka, and ends in Wolfsthal, a picturesque Austrian village.
After we woke up to beautiful sunny day we decided to go on a bike trip with my girlfriend. After we had thoroughly learned about different bike trails we chosethe Bratislava Tour trail. This trail starts in Petrzalka and goes through the towns and villages of Wolfstahal, Hainburg, Stopfenreuth, Engelhartstetten, Schloss Hof to Devinska Nova Ves (a district of Bratislava), Devina, Karlova Ves, Old Town and back to Petrzalka. We packed our things, tools in case we break our bikes included, enough liquids, some energy bar and, indeed, helmets which are not obligatory in Austria, however, they make you safer. And so we departed!
A way to borders
At first the road was clumsy for there are not enough bike trails in Petrzalka. Fortunately, soon we got on the-so called Peterzalka promenade designed for walkers as well as bikers. The promenade leads from the SNP bridge to the Petrzalka train station and the ride was fantastic. The project created a new European bike trail connecting Bratislava with other border towns. Near the district of Kopcany there was a long, wide and greatly marked two-way bike trail . We were riding on it until border area. Right after we got there we were greeted by usual boards saying “Slovakia in the European Union”, "Bratislava", "Petrzalka" and also Petrzalka bunkers , which are the remains of former defense line of the Czechoslovak Republic.
A pleasant surprise was a new rest area at a road tripoint. We stopped there for a while to decide our further direction. The road continuing straight forward went to Kittsee, an Austrian town popular among the people of Bratislava for affordable prices; the road going right led to the border crossing of Berg and the road on which we arrived went back to Petrzalka. For our goal was to reach Hainburg we went right to border crossing. The route went on an asphalt road through fields and a forest, which we appreciated for the weather was very hot. A sign in the middle of our journey directed us on a newly renovated BS-8 bunker that is a military museum today. Near the museum there is also a renovated military cemetery dating in the Great War, and a exhibition of infamous border fence that separated us from the West in the time of socialism. We recommend you to visit the place very much.
Crossing to Austria
After a short break, we continued on to the Berg border crossing. There you have to beware not particularly well chosen crossing across a two-lane road. However, after this you find yourself in Austria where you would be greeted with meadows and woody hills. The bike trail also serves as a flood dike . During recent floods we have seen with our own eyes that there is a very good reason for this. Field on the right side of the dike were demolished by water and even a month later after the floods there is still water in a giant “lake”; it seems that birds swimming there were the most happy about it. If you think our ride on a dike was boring, you are wrong. We had an opportunity to see different things at any moment. Once it was a panorama of the Slovak capital, then it was a busy roundabout, or fields covered with blossoming flowers.
A break in a picturesque town
Forty five minutes later we arrived at first Austrian town, Wolfsthal. Until the year 1996, it had formed one town together with neighboring Berg. Wolfsthal has splendid connection to Bratislava thanks to its direct bus line and also a train station. This very station is also the terminal of a one-rail electrified transport to the Austrian capital of Vienna. In Wolfsthal, there is a church, which is considered a pilgrim place; there are also schools where children learn even in Slovak, a war memorial , renovated Marian columns and indeed many beautiful family houses surrounded with small parks and gardens. This colorful village charmed us and refreshed us on our way to other places we will tell you about next week.

Summer is for tourism and extraordinary experiences. Recently we have visited Lower Austria. There we had a multiple-days trip and also hikes along historical trails. We learned about wild nature and on the following lines we tell you more about our journey, perhaps even inspire you to do some.
These days we received a new bike map of Lower Austria. Except of 7 TOP trails, there are bike trails suitable for families with small children. Also, you can find there routes for more demanding bikers. And, last but not least, there are new tips for star treks with places where are attractions and adventurous places.
As winter is coming and cold, rainy, or snowy weather with it, we decided to end biking season by a trip to the Hungarian town of Mosonmagyaróvár. The beginning of our tour was yet again in Petrzalka, a Bratislava borough.
Should you try to find some tips for trips, Lower Austria offers many. You can cool yourself on a boat ride on the largest underground lake in Europe. Or you can travel in time in a nostalgia express. People who love animals and nature can observe their life under water in Unterwasserrreich natural park, or they can watch bears of Arbesbach. And this is hardly everything you can do there.
Even this year, we spent some summer days on our bikes. As we live in Petrzalka, this area of blocs of flats is the point from where we start our trips.
Last week, we concluded our article while at the beginning of the new bike trail Jurava. In its proximity, the Nature Reservation of Sur is located. It is also called Jursky Sur. It was hard to resist temptation not to turn off our trail. We eventually did so to admire unique marshland.
Once we rode on bikes from Petrzalka across the Pristavni Bridge along the Small Danube and across Vrakunsky forest we found ourselves at the airport. From there we will continue to our first place of interest the M. R. Stefanik Memorial.
Last week we visited an extraordinary place- Trojmezi, a unique place where the borders of three countries meet, Slovakia, Austria, and Hungary. From there, we moved to Hungarian border town of Rajka. Today we will tell you more about it.
Last week we concluded our article in the easternmost Austrian town of Deutsch Jahrndorf. We were slowly approaching our destination, Trojmezi, along asphalt road lined with a tree alley.
After a visit to Pama on Wednesday we continue on following the traces of our one-day trip at the three-states border. Today we stop by an unusual chapel and take a look at the easternmost town in Austria.
Vsichni Na Bajk, an unusual competition, has been a success. It's second year is being held this year and competitors use a mobile app to participate. The app motivates to do sports and explore interesting places. The most diligent can win a new bike and other interesting prizes in the end of this summer.
In the outskirts of Slovakian metropolis, an important National Cultural Monument is located. When visiting Bratislava, you would not forget to have a stop also at this spot. Especially during summer months, the visitors will be rewarded with extraordinary outlook, despite the fact that the highest section of the castle is closed for tourists.
Winter is here again. For some, it is perhaps too cold and harsh, but to me it is the most popular season of the year. Everything is hidden under a fluffy white blanket of snow and acts somewhat calmer, and even cleaner than the rest of the year. It is also a time of winter holidays in the mountains, meeting with friends over a glass of mulled wine or it is a time of a great cabbage soup, which will warm you up in this season.
If you are one of those who love mountain biking, it is almost unnecessary to introduce you to a low about 100 kilometers long mountain ridge of the Male Karpaty. Mostly people of Bratislava and western Slovakia relax there, but also seek adrenaline to clear their heads and make them forget worries of everyday life.
Again, an amazing book of the Around Slovakia Edition by Dajama publishing. The book is named The Most Beautiful Hills for Bicycling. Last week, we explored by bike Slovakia-Austrian-Hungarian borderline. After getting across the border we get to picturesque town of Kittsee. There we walked on the square, stopped by many sights. But we didn’t mention the most important one.
The unique SNP bridge and its noticeable structure on top resembling a flying saucer is one of the most popular and most photographed landmarks in Bratislava. Today it naturally belongs to the city, however, this wasn’t always true.
At the beginning of September by bike we went toe explore Slovakian-Austrian-Hungarian borderline. The beginning of our trip was in Petrzalka, the largest housing estate in Slovakia and central Europe as well.
Autumn weather is ideal for biking, so today we introduce routes that are suitable for the whole family. We head to the east of Poprad in Slovakia and from there pure adventure awaits.
In the last article of our bike trip we move from the largest baroque castle compound in Austria, Schloss Hof, across new Bikebridge of Liberty, to the city districts of Slovakia’s capital, Bratislava.
The medieval town of Hainburg was an interesting stop on our bike journey. Today we continue across a long bridge, two Austrian towns and the largest castle compound in Austria – Schloss Hof.
In the previous part of our bike trip we get across Austrian borders. We stopped by at the picturesque town of Wolftshal. Then we continued to our next destination, the town of Hainburg.
Among the most famous dominants of the Slovak capital includes the New Bridge with a panoramic restaurant on the top of the bridge pillar. A little bit shorter tradition has a viewing platform above the restaurant, to which we will visit this time.
In the Czech Republic people have their astronomical clock, in Vienna world-famous Cathedral St. Stephen and on the Slovak Republic have their pride, unique blue church, one of the notable attractions of Bratislava.
