SK, Prešov Region – A Region of Majestic Mountains
After Prešov and the medieval Šariš Castle, we will go into nature today. We will discover the place of mining of expensive (Slovak) opal for you, we will ride the Lopušná dolina by bike and complete the tourist crossing along the Tatra highway.
A Trip to Nature
Approximately 30 kilometers from Prešov, between the villages of Červenica and Zlatá Baňa, there are unique opal mines through which you will be guided by a surface nature trail. It was here that one of the largest opals in the world, the so-called Harlequin, was discovered and exhibited at the Museum of Natural History in Vienna. Even one of the Dubnica opals has its place on the crown of the British queen.
The site itself is located in a wooded area and is open to the public seasonally. Thanks to nature lovers, you can take a tour of this unique monument with an expert explanation of history, geology and mineralogy and learn a lot of interesting things about the treasure of Slanské vrchy. At present, opal mining is minimal and the mines are used more for educational purposes or as the largest wintering ground for bats in Slovakia.
Going Down the Road
For lovers of alpine trips, we highly recommend taking the Tatra Highway. Its total length exceeds 72 kilometers and the most common access to it is from the settlements of the town of High Tatras. It stretches from the Great White Ball to a place called Tokarina near the Bobrovecká Vápenice recreation center.
The main road leads around alpine huts. It will take you around the cottage U Zeleného plesa, Zamkovský´s and Rainer´s Cabins, further through Hrebienok, Slezský dům to Štrbské pleso. From there through Tři studánky and Podbanská, through the valleys to the mentioned Tokarines. The Tatra highway is crossed by a number of hiking trails, either in the direction of the Tatra valleys or to the peaks.
A Tip for Biking
The Prešov region is also a paradise for cyclists. From the number of interesting cycle paths, we recommend, for example, an undemanding and nicely arranged route from Poprad to Svit via Lopušná dolina, which even children can handle.
The more than 26-kilometer route leads from the center of Poprad to its edge, where the shopping zone is located. From here it continues to the village Spišská Teplica. After crossing its center, it heads to the agricultural cooperative, from where it heads for a slight ascent to Vápenice and across Lopušná dolina to the town of Svit. Then it continues back to Poprad.
