Turkey, Cappadocia – The Land of Beautiful Horses V

Published: 24.11.2014
My journey now goes across ticket barriers to the museum compound, and then to the St Barbora church, who became a Christian against the will of her father. Initially, he imprisoned her and then killed her. Legend has it that he was struck by lightning for this.

Now guided tours summon there so I quickly approach next church “apple”. KappadokieIt was named after Archangel Gabriel that holds a ball resembling an apple in his hand. Then comes Snake church where the fight of St George with dragon is depicted. Also, the name of the church honors the heroe’s fight. Paintings are very simple. Also a man with very large breasts is depicted there. According to the legend, it is hermit Onofria who lived in Egypt. Before he used to be a beautiful women that got tired by constant flattery of suitors. She asked God to help her to get rid off them and let her serve only the Lord. God met her demand and changed her to an old hermit.

Then I walk up a mild hill to reach a very mysterious church called Dark church . Originally, it was hidden really good and even iconoclasts did not find it. Paintings inside have been preserved until the present. One has to pay an admission but I still want to see it. Next, the last church, the “sandal” church is on my plan. It is called according to beautifully painted sandals of Jesus’s apostles or according to an imprint of a step in the back part of the church.

Kappadokie

When I saw everything thoroughly, I looked forward to get rid of the crowds. I walk away along the road. I walked up about 800 meters to an abandoned house. A road to pink valley runs from there. There, one experiences true Cappadocia and its glamorous views opening in front of one eyes as well as eagles flying above the canyon. The road is well-marked and full of new experiences. One gets really excited.

Kappadokie

Nature was really crazy there, crazy good. I arrive at the village the inhabitants of which lived in a monumental rock similar to huge termite mound. In the 1950s, large cracks appeared and that’s why people scared of the rock falling apart, moved in front of it. And they built a new village. A half of the rock really collapsed. It is easy to see how rooms or paths were carved within it.

Kappadokie

After the tour I am hitchhiking a car and travel to the Simeon’s Valley. He settled in the hermitory that Simeon did not leave for next 20 years. His students brought him food and water by climbing narrow stairs in the rock. The view has not changed until the present. Magnificent rock formations are around and they are really romantic when one takes an afternoon walk.

Kappadokie

Here my trip ends. And I am getting ready to get back to Goreme. Hitchhiking is very easy. I got there really fast and eat a dinner. Then I visit a dervish religious ritual called sema. I takes places in an underground cave. I look forward to mysterious atmosphere.

To be continued...
