|Basic information about river|
Metuje river is, on its upper flow, navigable after snow thaw in spring or after heavy rains only. However, water register in Jaroměř cannot be decisive. The water register Krčín is better, wher this would show 40 cm, for a successull descent of Peklo (Hell). In such case, the rest of the whole flow would be navigable where the water-register 30 cm would be sufficient.
However, Metuje river was hit by floodings, but not in such measure that the water basin changed in an essential way. The navigation on upper flow is complicated by overgron on banks, on its lower flow the weirs cause the difficulties. Quite exceptionally would be navigable some section of Metuje - river in sandstone passes, in such case would be an extraordinary expedtion navigation.
The river sources in Adersbach -Teplice Rocks in an altitude of 586 m. It flows always in south direction, at Nové Město turns to the west and in Jaroměř mouth from left side into Elbe-river. Its water surface makes 608 km². On its upper sections, the river flows through passes of sandstone rocks, near Teplice the valley becomes wider but the river-basin is narrow (4-5m), stony, the stream is quick and river basin is not clear. Near to Náchod, the river-basin becomes wider, the slope is bigger and there are more stones in a river. The river is more clear, in spite of the fact that the navigability difficulty is moderately higher.
The surroundings are afforested, especially near to Náchod, but, otherwise, the river flows between fields and meadows, especially on its lower flow near to Nové Město, where the river basin is regulated. Many weirs oalong upper and lower flow are not passable. After Nové Město, you can drive-at higher water level-through new basin, used for irrigation, when the stages and weirs are passable.
