The river sources below south part of Velká Fatra Mountains.
|Basic information about river|
This river sources below south part of Velká Fatra Mountains, in Kremnica Hills. At first, it flows in north-west direction, and near to the community of Sklené, it turns to the north. This direction is to be maintained up to its mouth into Váh-river in the community of Vrútky. Its river-basin takes 395 km², the length of navigable section makes 26 kms. Turiec-river has, in its upper section, narrow, 6-8 m wide river-bed with gravely bottom, which subsequently comes into sandy and clayish bottom. The width is enlarging up to 10-15 m. Anyway, on its middle section, the river becomes more narrow and has many turnings and meandres. It flows among meadows, the banks are densily overgrown with trees. This fact makes the navigation quite difficult, especially during high water level.
On its low section, the river is regulated, there are appearing broken quarry stones. The navigation is not too difficult from technical point of view, nevertheless, it is very interesting, as far as the countryside is concerned. Turiec could be descended by watermen-beginners, in open boats (vessels). Each spring, there is regularly taken place an event Turiec Watermen Tourists´ Ability Drive, in a section Velký Sepčín-Strečno.
