SK, Liptov – Havranok Open Air Archeological Museum and a Solitary Tower
We are about to spend the following weeks in the Liptov region. There we learn about its many beautiful nooks. Today we go to Liptovska Mara and see the open air archeological museum of Havranok which is also a sight of cultural significance.
It is bit more strenous way to get there. But don't discourage yourselves. You may reach Havranek from Bobrovnik village by following the red trail, or from Vlachy village. The hike takes about 40 minutes. Should you have a car, you may ride up to the Virgin Mary tower and from here on uphill.
After while you get on the hilltop of Ulozisko (742 m). You need to pay a small fee before entering the compound. Inside, there are accommodation facilities, fortification, or cult items of the early Iron Age and late Roman period. Also, you will be in the most important area of the Puchov culture in Slovakia. You will learn how Celtic fortification was discovered, sacrifice shafts, and stone ways. Also, a Slavic settlement founded later is well documended. The same applies to a wooden castle with a moat and residential tower. Moreover, a small church was built in this area too.
Examples of contemporary life include a settlement featuring pottery workshop, farming structures, and early Iron Age temple. Moreover, there is multi-layered fortification featuring gates, and a 12th-16th century fortified wooden castle. During the season (May-October) you may see some of regular events here such as Celtic sacrifice ritual, working leathers or sword fights. To see these off the season you must book it in advance.
The original Virgin Mary tower is also a part of the museum. As we mention it at the beginning of the article, the tower was originaly built in the 12th century. This solitary white structure by Liptovska Mara dam is a showcaase of Liptov's Gothic. Inside, a collection of reproduced 15th century panel paintings are on display, these were original part of Gothic altars – furniture inside the Virgin Mary church. Paintings also represented the life in 13 villages which no longer exist.
The trip to Havranok archeological open air museum is a great thing to do for families as you will learn some history, see interesting architecture, and hike.
