SK, Liptovsky Jan – Extraordinary Town in the Liptov Region
Today we visit one of the most interesting towns in Liptov. It is interesting for its history, art, architecture, and nature. The town we talk about is Liptovsky Jan. The town is set in the mouth of Janska Valley at the Nizke Tatry.
We moved along the D1 freeway from Liptovsky Mikulas to the beautiful town of Liptovsky Jan. The Stiavnica river flows through there. Right when we arrived we noticed the town’s impressive architecture. We admired the number of chateaus, yeomen houses, and curie. When we parked our car in the town’s center we found ourselves in front of the most important sight – 13th century Gothic church of St John the Baptist. This structure surrounded with a wall looked like it was inviting us to enter. We saw beautiful ceiling, altars and paintings displaying Biblical motives. A part of the décor was covered with cloth due to ongoing renovation The panels told us on the church’s ground plan and crypts hidden within. Or about origin of the church (the town adopted its name after the church). Eventually, we took pictures of the church and moved to an interesting structure right next to it.
This old single storey house is calledPodzemi Pod Vezemi (Underground Below Towers) . A small museum is to be found inside. It holds interesting expositions, more on here. Then we continued in our walk through the town. It was founded in 1263 yet some trace its origin even earlier to 1200. From this time come the first written remark on local chapel. Since inception the town was administered by rich yeoman families which in turn cared about its development as about 25 preserved sights prove – they include chateaus, curies, or other more technical sights.
Unique nature is another thing what makes this town great. We enjoyed while walking up to a wooden observation tower or staying at a water attraction. Rich on mineral and thermal springs (13 in the town and 10 more around), Liptovsky Jan was obvious choice why to visit the springs. We headed towards the most famous and popular one – Kada. The spring was chiseled out in tuff in 1939. Later this was adjusted into a small lake (1.5 meters in depth). Water temperature here is steadily around 22 to 26 degrees Celsius. A much larger water area is right adjacent to the small lake. Yet is shallower and colder.
Near this sight there is a grass area which is adjusted for people to relax there. Inside beautiful summer house you can taste from the Teplica thermal spring. In our case, we at least dipped our legs in neighboring lakes and drunk from a healing spring.
You can walk Janske and Stanisovska Valley nature trail which is close to the spring. The Stanisovska Cave is along the trail. Also, you can climb some of the peaks of the Nizke Tatra Mountains . During the winter season, you can visit two ski resorts or a year-long open thermal outdoor swimming pool. Many hotels and restaurants offer plentiful options where to sleep or eat.
Yet we spent only one day here for we didn’t have much time to do anything else but short sightseeing which depleted us from learning more about this impressive town. We decided to see this place next year with accommodation booked in advance for couple of days of adventure. We recommend you to do the same.

There soon will be spring. And a new tourist season as well. Please accept our invintation for this slightly difficult yet beautiful climb to one of the most beautiful summits in Slovakia – Velky Choc.
After a visit in a small yet very interesting museum called the Underground below the Towers in Liptovsky Jan. The museum is focused on coins from their very beginnings deep below surface until they are actually made in the mint. We quickly moved from Janska Valley to see this. The guide from Stanisovska Cave had been waiting for us there.
