SK, Liptovsky Mikulas – The Town of Olympic Winners and More I
Couple of kilometers from Liptovsky Hradok, a town we saw last week, there is Liptovsky Mikulas – a district town, social and cultural center of the Liptov region. Today we take a tour in this town.
While moving from one place to another, we were enjoying the atmosphere of one of the most beautiful regions in Slovakia – the Liptov region. No wonder, this fascinating region has 15 ski resorts, 4 caves, 3 open-air historical museums, and a sight that is on the UNESCO’s list (Vlkolinec). Moreover, there are 3 national parks, 700 kilometers of biking trails, 2 bikeparks, and 4 aqua parks. The largest town of the regionLiptovsky Mikulas is a great starting point for trips around.
It is really easy to get in there. The town connects right to the D1 freeway and the main railway line Bratislava–Kosice. It is surrounded by the West and Low Tatras and Chocske Hills and it is close to Liptovska Mara lake. We made use of a local road to get there from Liptovsky Hradok . Couple of minutes later we parked our car in the center. Even before we set off to the walk through the pedestrian zone, we read couple of lines on the history of the city.
The first written note on Liptovsky Mikulas dates to 1286. It bears the name of the patron (Saint Nicholas) of this small town which once consisted only of a church and couple of houses. The town had been growing permanently since then. During the 14th century, the town became an importing center to trade. This is apparent when looking at its privileges, one of them being a privilege to organize markets 2 times a year. Since 1677, the town has been the seat of the Liptovska dominion, therefore the seat to many institutions such as courts. In 1713, one such court gave the famous Juraj Janosik a death sentence. The town played a prominent role in 1848, the Appeal of the Slovak Nation on its stance in the then Hungary. The town was almost completely destroyed during the WWII. Yet it was renovated and today it offers an attractive walk in the renovated historical center and also in surrounding town districts. The town is one of the most important centers of the Protestant church therefore there are many evangelists. At 577 meters the town is one of the ten most high situated towns in Slovakia.
So we set off to see sights. As we were being on our way we got an idea to stop at Liptovska Mar (you can read an article about this place here). But the weather wasn’t good. So we refused this trip for the time being. Somehow, we found ourselves in front of St Nicholas church. First, we found interesting a wooden money box which stands in front of it. We opened it like some curious children. Inside we found two scriptures. The first one tells the story of the sight. The second is on the “Find Liptov’s Treasures” project which guides tourists, children especially, through town’s sights. It even tries to push you to do some activities. However, you need a special leaflet for this that can be found at the visitor’s center.
Next week you will learn about the rest of our journey as well as why the town is called “Olympic”..

The Liptov region in central Slovakia is very diverse. Every year it lures many visitors. It is thanks to its beautiful nature, very diverse in fact. Except for tourist and bicycle trails it has a lot of beauty left in the underground. There are also thermal springs or you can learn a lot of about history there. Also people loving adrenaline will enjoy it.
