SK, Liptovsky Mikulas – Sightseeing
Namesti Zadosti Slovenskeho Naroda square was the place we visited previously. Back then, we already noticed the Slovakian Museum of Enviromental Protection and Caves.
This specialized museum was recently renovated. Its 1 400 square meters of area offer modern and interactive exhibitions in their natural ecosystems. There is a cave exhibition featuring beautiful stalactites. On the roof of the museum, there is a lookout tower from where you may enjoy a fabulous vista over the town.
Next was a walk in the town. Cerny Orel building was our very first stop. It is one of the most important landmarks in the town which was formerly a traveller's lodge. In the 19th century, a stage was added which converted the lodge into an important social and cultural center. Some important historic events took place here including the premiere of Kocourkov, a Jan Chalupka's comedy, the very first play of Slovak amateaur theatre. The public assembly where Slovaks first supported the idea of creating a state with Czechs took place here. This historic moment is represented by a memorial plate.
The research department of Gašpar Fejérpataky-Belopotocky's Library is situated here as well as a Liptov Museum gallery, and the temporary exhibition of Hunting and Fishing in Liptov Region. The exhibition covers the history of both activities starting in the Middle-Ages and ending in the present time.
Koloman Sokol Gallery was next thing on our itineary. Situated opposite to St Nicholas' church on Osvoboditelu square, the gallery is has been housed in the spaces belonging to Pongrac curia since 2002. It displays over 50 top-notch works of art of the founder of Slovakian and Mexican graphic art. Temporary exhibitions take place on the ground floor. The first floor is dedicated to the presentation of the famous artist himself. When walking through galleries pay attention to the building itself. In March 1713 the tiral against the famous bandit Juraj Janosik was held here.
The rest of the time on our tour was spent at one another important sight – the synagogue in Holleho Street close to the town center. This spectacular classicist structure was built between the years 1842 and 1846. The synagogue is open to the public mostly during the summer season. Today, it mostly represents a memorial to once numerous Jewish community of Liptovsky Mikulas. First religious center, it would later become a warehouse. Fortunately, its restoration gave it back its original look and also the new purpose of a cultural-social center.
We walked the city through and learned about its all nooks. Many experiences gained there will be long remembered, and, moreover, we will be happy to return to Liptovsky Mikulas at some point in the future.
