SK: Liptov – When it rained in “paradise” I
Our vacation got little bit ugly due to cold and rainy weather. This was why our initial goal was almost abandoned. We wanted to enjoy biking and walks in beautiful nature.
We planned a visit of open-air museum in Pribylina and a museum of Povazska Forest Railroad right for the first day. On following days we only had few moments between rains to go mushrooming, bike trip, or short walk.
In the region of Liptov , there is not just beautiful and irreplaceable nature you can “consume” for a hwole year. It is a region that has its own kind of people who are living in harmony with it and, at the same time, to get maximum out of it. We speak about trade –an old salt road went through here – and regarding crafts. Craftsmen known across whole Slovakia were masons, and carpenters. They were known not only in Slovakia but in Vienna and Budapest as well.
The majority of local population was engaged in this. Then they worked in agriculture with special attention to sheep, and they also did crafts related to sheep products. Also important was timber industry and hunting. We can’t forget plant production, production of honey and orchading.
Well, have I forget some thing they did it is certain that the museum of pastoral farming in Liptovsky Hradek didn’t. Together with open-air museum in Pribylina it is a part of the Liptov Museum in Ruzomberok.
The building where the museum is located, was built in the beginning of the 18th century. It used to be a residence of the Copper Office and also the office of Royal Salt Storage. When it was undergoing renovation original interior decorations, paintings, or arches were used. This is not only good for displayed items but it gives you a feeling of the past.
The first floor is a place where a prefect of Likavske and Hradecke dominion lived. It is decorated similarly as other castles and noble houses. There are hunting trophies, paintings, inlaid furniture, old textiles, china and other daily live items of the rich.
There is a rich exhibition in the attic related to shepherd’s culture. Especially for me, a Polabska plain inhabitant, it was surprising how importance of displayed items goes beyond region and even nation. From replicas of huts that used original features, to many wooden bowls for sheep milk and other products made of it. Shepherds also produced wool and manufactured leather. I was interested not only by satchels but also by metal decorations, clips and it also surprised me that shepherds used to wear sturdy brass rings.
Not only work is part of men’s life. One part of the museum is devoted to musical instruments and special place is reserved for bells, bigger or smaller, that cows and sheep wore.
When I remember an exhibition of woodcarvers I have to remember also local historical figure - Juro Janosik, a bandit depicted on several wood pieces. There are also clothes of shepherds that remind of his fame.
To be continued...

Today, we set off to a place near the town of Ruzomberok. It is a beautiful valley in the Velka Fatra mountains. If you guess that we go to Cutkovska valley, you're right.
Summer, fall or winter- visiting Malinho Brdo means great sporting activities. Bikers, skiers and tourists, all will love it here.
Namesti Zadosti Slovenskeho Naroda square was the place we visited previously. Back then, we already noticed the Slovakian Museum of Enviromental Protection and Caves.
We are about to spend the following weeks in the Liptov region. There we learn about its many beautiful nooks. Today we go to Liptovska Mara and see the open air archeological museum of Havranok which is also a sight of cultural significance.
This time we will take you to the well-known Liptov village Bešeňová, which is sought after mainly for the year-round water park and geothermal springs reaching up to 70 ° C. We will guide you not only through this amazing attraction, but also visit other sights of the village.
Since we like hiking, today we will take you to one beautiful place. Our starting point will be the picturesque village of Liptovská Anna (Liptovský Mikuláš District), the origin of which dates back to the year of 1396.
Today we will take all tourist enthusiasts to the picturesque village of Kalameny, which is located in close proximity to the famous Lúčky baths. From here we head to the highest castle not only in Slovakia but also in Central Europe - the ruins of Liptov Castle.

In the eastern part of Liptovska basin at the foothills of the Low Tatras, there is the quiant mountain village of Kralova Lehota. This village is an important junction of the roads from the east, south, and west of the country. Interesting here are both natural and man-made sights which we are going to visit on this day.

Today we set out to the beautiful Tatra village of Podbanska, partially a borough of Vysoke Tatry town, the other part belongs to Pribylina village.
Not far away from Liptovský Hrádok is situated the newest and the most visited nature museum in Slovakia – Liptov Village Museum in Pribylina. We have already written something about this museum, however, we will look more in detail on its static exposition of a former Povážská Forest Railroad (Považská lesná železnica).
The actions of local museum influence even the present. There are many lectures on various subjects, educational and memorial programs, workshops and classes of traditional handcrafts.
After our visit in Kalameny village we remain in the Liptov region. We move couple of kilometers to the smallest town of Liptov. It is rich, however, on natural, cultural and historical sights. The town we talk about is Liptovsky Hradok.
The region, placed among High Tatra and Low Tatra Mountains (North Slovakia) belongs, thanks to nature conditions and cultural-historical monuments, to one of most beautiful and popular areas of tourist movement in Slovakia.
Couple of kilometers from Liptovsky Hradok, a town we saw last week, there is Liptovsky Mikulas – a district town, social and cultural center of the Liptov region. Today we take a tour in this town.
Last week we started our tour in the historical core of Liptovsky Mikulas, the alleged entrance gate to the Liptov Region. Despite bad weather, we saw many sights and places we tell you about today.
There soon will be spring. And a new tourist season as well. Please accept our invintation for this slightly difficult yet beautiful climb to one of the most beautiful summits in Slovakia – Velky Choc.
Like the High Tatra West Tatra is also popular area. You can have some remarkable outdoor experience there. Both mountains seems to be one whole. However, unlike the High Tatra, West Tatra are lower. Its mountains are more covered of grass. Barance mountain (2 185 m) is a popular locality by tourists. This mountain is situated in the south of this mountain ridge.
Liptov region hides many attractive localities to visit. Should you be fans of skiing or hikes then there are beautiful mountains for you. Water enthusiasts can have fun at water-parks. On the other hand, history enthusiasts can go and see places such as Liptovsky Mikulas, Ruzomberok etc.

Except for tourist and bicycle trails it has a lot of beauty left in the underground. There are also thermal springs or you can learn a lot of about history there. Also people loving adrenaline will enjoy it.
After a week we are back to Liptov. This time I will not tempt the no crazy adrenaline games, on the contrary, I invite you to the museum. But not just any do! Underground beneath the towers, as this tiny museum in Liptovsky Jan name, conceals an engaging exhibition that will introduce you to a life full of coins from birth in the depths of the earth after its birth in the mint.
After a visit in a small yet very interesting museum called the Underground below the Towers in Liptovsky Jan. The museum is focused on coins from their very beginnings deep below surface until they are actually made in the mint. We quickly moved from Janska Valley to see this. The guide from Stanisovska Cave had been waiting for us there.
If you belong to those who cannot imagine a summer without swimming and having fun in the water and you do not like crowded swimming pools or water parks and rather prefer swimming in lakes, ponds, rivers or ponds, you certainly know Liptovska Mara.
