SK, Low Tatras – Stone Cottage Below Chopok
Today we visit the third most highly located mountain cottage in Slovakia – Stone Cottage Below Chook. Many people who love our mountains know it just as Kamienka.
A very nice mountain cottage Kamienka is located in 2000 meters above the sea level on the Low Tatras main ridge just under the peak of Chopok ( 2024 m. a. s. l. ). We went there in the end of summer. There were fewer tourists. We were glad we arrived there among the first and had a chance to enjou calm atmosphere of Kamienka.
How to get there
You can get there no matter if you are going from south, west, north or east. The cottage is opened whole year. We were accommodated in a ski resort Jasna situated on the northern side of Chopok. The weather wasn’t good so we choose easier option and got almost the cottage by three separate cable cars. From there we reached Chopok and than our steps headed towards Kamienka. You can get to Chopok by hiking for there are well-marked tourist trails. Or you can just choose to spend part of your way there in a cable car. We wanted to be on the top as fast as possible. The weather forecast wasn’t pleasant for the afternoon and we wanted to have our trip really nice, for we planned it only as a half-day trek. Our journey went across Derese, Polana, Tri Vody and it was supposed to end near Vrbicke Pleso at the end of Demänovska Valley. How it went we will tell you some other time.
It is possible to get to the cottage even from the south side of Chopok going from ski-tourist resort Bystra-Tale , from the stop Srdicko by a cable car. You can get almost to the cottage itself. The more fit will appreciate nature of the Low Tatras. These people rather hike there. Even from this side you can split your journey to several parts. One of them you can undergo it partially by a cable car and the rest as a hike. Excited tourists will enjoy hiking on the main ridge of the Low Tatras, regardless the side from which they would go. Marked tourist trails from every direction lead to the cottage. On your way by the ridge you may even see marmots playing, or chamois eating grass. However, you should still bear in mind that weather is very unpredictable on mountains. Before you go there you should check detailer weather forecast, regardless the season. Despite well-marked tourist trails, predominantly in the winter season, it could be difficult to navigate in mountain terrain . We recommend you to take with you a good map.
What the cottage offers?
Every visitor should realize that there is a good offer of delicious meals and drinks at the cottage, however, there is no source of water near it so they have to take drinking water there by themselves. Every true tourist also takes with him his garbage. Except classic Kamienka cabbage soup you can order other simple but delicious meals. The staff is very pleasant and will take good care of you. Many employees of high-class hotels or restaurants in the city should take care of them. The cottage has a common sleeping room with capacity for 25 persons. In season it is overcrowded, we recommend to book your place several days ahead. As there is no source of water, there is only a dry toilet.
Evenings are beautiful at the cottage. You fall asleep and wake up in the mountains. Silence interrupts only a wind and it is a true pleasure for soul. Clear mountain air would clean your mind. We stopped there only for a while, get warm with a good tea, ate a sweet bar, wrote a post card for our grandparents (not only a stamp of Stone Cottage, but also a mountain book and a stamp of Chopok you can find in Kamienka), checked our tourist equipment and descended. The weather was about to change rapidly and we wanted to be already under our blankets.

After a visit in a small yet very interesting museum called the Underground below the Towers in Liptovsky Jan. The museum is focused on coins from their very beginnings deep below surface until they are actually made in the mint. We quickly moved from Janska Valley to see this. The guide from Stanisovska Cave had been waiting for us there.

Our goal today was a tourist view platform above Pavcina Lehota town.
Those who love nature will sure agree with my following statement – the end of summer and beginning of autumn is the best period for tourism. Everything seems more beautiful and more quite because the tourist season is long gone and the winter season haven’t even began. Nature changed its clothes to more colorful one and you can see animals where you wouldn’t expect them – right on a tourist pathway.
