Slovenia: Bohinjske Lake – One of the Most Famous Places in the Julian Alps – VIDEO
A scenic road along the Sava Bohinjska River from the famous town of Bled will lead you to the lake. A stop at the local lake with an iconic view of the church standing on the island is a must. I can also highly recommend a visit to Bled Castle high on a rock above the lake.
But now we come to Lake Bohijn itself. Its crystal clear water reflects the wooded slopes and rocky peaks of the surrounding mountains. On one side you can see Voket, Prčivec and Vrtec, on the other Vogel and Veliki Raskovec, at the end of the lake above the mouth of the river Savica then the two thousand Lanževica and Kal.
You can go to most peaks on marked trekking paths. Probably the best view of the lake is offered by the peak of Pršivec, where you will be taken by a rough hike of about 4 hours. One of the most popular destinations is the small Triglav Lakes, from where you can continue a three-day trek to the highest mountain in Slovenia, Triglav.
If you are not a fully skilled trekker, or you just want to make your way to the peaks easier, use the Vogel cable car, which will take you from the lake to a height of 1535 meters above sea level.
One of the most impressive places in the area is the 78-meter-high Savica waterfall, which springs from the rock and forms the main tributary of the lake. It is fed by water from the Black Lake 500 meters above it, which reaches the waterfall through a system of underground karst corridors and lakes.
Admission is paid at the waterfall and prepare for the great interest of other visitors. If you are looking for easily accessible places around the lake, be sure not to miss a visit. If you like to discover maybe a little smaller but more hidden waterfalls that you have for yourself, Savica will probably disappoint you, as well as slightly disappointed me. But what is definitely worth a visit are the beautiful deciduous forests in its vicinity.
Stop at the gorges of the small river Mostnice on the other side of the lake. Over the centuries, the water has washed away beautiful ponds, ravines and all sorts of rock formations. At the end of the gorge, you will walk across the romantic Voje plain, at the end of which you will see a 21-meter waterfall.
The lake itself is one of the most visited places in Slovenia. Just for great summer swimming, but mainly as a starting point for many trips around.
