Greece, Santorini - An Extended Weekend
Published: 9.1.2021
Certainly the most picturesque and romantic place I have seen in Europe is the Greek island of Santorini. And that is one of the reasons why we returned here this year after nine years. I will not lie when I reveal that another important aspect of our revisit was very cheap tickets, of which there are more than enough on offer. The best weather is of course here in the season, but even now it is a pleasant 18 degrees.
We are staying in a villa right on the cliffs near the capital Fira, the rooms are cave type. The prices are reasonable, so you don't have to worry about this holiday ruining you. And most importantly, who wouldn't want to watch breathtaking sunsets right from the terrace of their room. The only downside is the only remote access to the beach, you have to drive to the other side of the island to the resorts of Perissa or Kamari.
We start with a walk in Fira and it is impossible not to notice that there are no cruise liners with tourists sailing around the caldera. This is also the reason why neither the cable car nor the donkeys that take tourists from the port to the city are busy at all. The town looks completely different than we remember. Empty streets, empty or completely closed hotels, restaurants, bars. What we're talking about is a bit of a sad sight. But it moves all the more pleasantly here, we don't have to squeeze with anyone anywhere. If you have time for a longer walk, walk to Imerovigli, which is about 20 minutes walk from Fira. This is where the couple goes on their honeymoon.
Every day a bus departs from Fira to the most photographed town of Oia. A one-way ticket costs 1.20 euros. Here the situation is similar to that in Fira, a minimum of tourists and empty restaurants. But the higher the prices, the coffee will cost you 6 euros. Instead, you will walk through the town in peace to places where you would not normally get due to the crowds. The views will take your breath away. From here are the most amazing sunsets over the caldera.
Oia still has a traditional look, which does not even spoil such a noticeable tangle of cables. During the reconstruction, they were laid in the ground. And so even today, visitors can admire its magical atmosphere, which consists of narrow cobbled streets, white houses with blue window frames and blue domes of churches.
The town of Pyrgos is also worth a visit, so if you have time, head here as well. One small note at the end. Expect to buy some gifts or souvenirs at the airport. There is only a very small grocery store here.
