CZ, Krupka – Ore Mountains Town of Miners and Romantic Poets – VIDEO
Published: 12.11.2019
Not far from Teplice, the mining town Krupka is situated below the slopes of the Ore Mountains. Thanks to the romantic surroundings and the historical center of the town, it was popular with tourists already at the beginning of the 19th century. In 2019, Krupka became a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Erzgebirge mining region.
We begin our visit on the place of the former Krupka castle. Only outer walls rmain and one defence tower, however the location of the rocky promotory offers you a beautiful vista into the surroundings. Right below you, there Is Hussite Street which marks the original city center.
Note the church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary from the 14th century and the wooden belfry they built here a century later. Just a bit lower is the hospital church of St. Spirit from the mid-15th century and underneath the inconspicuous Art Nouveau church of St Wenceslas.
In the valley, on the left side, you can see the pilgrimage church of Our Lady of Sorrows. Right next to it is the current city center in the part called Bohosudov. But let's go for a walk around the surrounding hills, which will give you some of the mining history here.
Krupka became famous mostly for tin mining. Two nature trails pass through the historical center - In the Footsteps of Miners and Border Mining Nature Trail. Both will lead you to the original adits and a few beautiful views.
Be sure to visit the Old Martin sightseeing gallery, which used to open the longest tin ore vein in Central Europe - the Lukáš vein. Opposite you can see a small open-air museum mining.
The cableway to Komáří vížka also leads from Bohosudov. It offers a wide view of the Central Bohemian Uplands. České středohoří and a large coal basin in Most. You can also get up by car or bus. Follow the blue trail from here to the bottom and stop at the ruins of Kyšperk Castle.
The Ore Mountains are still one of the neglected regions and I think it is a great pity. I was very pleasantly surprised by the visit to Krupka.
New ski resorts, modern cableways, kilometers of maintained cross-country trails, adrenaline fun, observation towers… There are thousands of reasons why to spend time in the Ore Mountains. By the end of autumn, beautiful skiing terrain and opportunities to do sports are becoming relevant.
A small Ore Mountains village with only a hundred inhabitants lies on the very border with Germany. The local abandoned border crossing is located directly in Český Jiřetín and connects the village with the German settlement Deutschgeorgenthal, which belongs to the village Neuhausen.
This year's unpredictable weather and more difficult travel conditions are increasingly encouraging us to explore our homeland. Fortunately, there are more than enough opportunities for great use of free time in our country in the Czech Republic. This time we are going to the Ore Mountains for the weekend, we plan to spend the night under the aisle near the village of Měděnec, a sports day in the Klínovec Trail Park and relaxation by the pond.
On the lower reaches of the Ohře River lies the inconspicuous town of Louny. But do not at first glance, Louny definitely deserves attention. Whether as part of a trip to the Bohemian Uplands or to discover Czech history.
Where to go with your children for the weekend? The Ore Mountains are ideal. There are many possibilities of accommodation - either in the highest situated Czech town Boží Dar, or perhaps in the quiet town Loučná pod Klínovcem.
This year's winter is really rich in snow. And where to go on a trip when the lifts are closed, but you want to enjoy the snow? There are few possibilities in the Czech Republic and the Czech mountains are not only the Giant Mountains, the Jizera Mountains or the Jeseníky Mountains. We chose the somewhat not so touristy Ore Mountains with the highest mountain Klínovec.
There is an incredible number of trails around Boží Dar. Especially for families with children, this is the ideal vacation spot that one can do all year round. The Krušné Mountains are not too high, so they can take a longer trip with their children. In winter there is a wealth of ski slopes and cross-country trails.
If you hike in less known and popular localities with less tourists to meet instead of picking places that look good in some travel brochure, than the place which is matter of today’s article is the best for you. Make a trip to Horni Castle which is near Straze nad Ohri.
Unlike in the 1990s, we don’t see very often some objects or reservations in the Czech Republic to be included to UNESCO’s World Heritage list. This rare occasion is about to happen again. The “Mining Culture Landscape of Erzgebirge/Krusnohori" applies to be part of the list. Czech and German (Saxon) officials have sent the application. If the land will become the part of UNESCO should be decided in the following year.
In 1516, the owner of Ostrovske dominion, Stepan Slik, founded the settlement of Udoli sv. Jachyma near silver deposits. The settlement was inhabited mostly by settlers from neighboring Saxony. When the settlement’s status was changed to the free mining town, there lived 18 thousand people n 1533. It was the second most populous city in the Kingdom of Bohemia!
Would the Mining and Cultural Landscape of the Ore Mountains became a part of the UNESCO world and nature heritage. Those introduced to the problem believe it would. Yet don’t wait on the decision of the commission. Go on your own to see small towns, settlements, mining sights, and wild nature.
