CZ, Blansko – Rocky Mill
Once we introduced you the new interactive exhibition in the Moravian Karst Nature House we move bit further. Today we talk about our starting locality which is called Rocky Mill. This one is unique for many reasons.
Rocky Mill is located at the meeting point of Pusty and Suchy Zlab near Punkevni Valley, the Moravian Karst National Reservation. There is a large car park, well actually two. Once you park your car there you can follow a nature trail leading to Macocha Gorge. Another option is to follow the Jan Smarda trail which takes you to caves, waterfall, and other interesting sights around. Moreover, there is the hotel of the same name which has been standing here for seventy years. Except for classic package of accommodation and restaurant you can also rent scooters and walking sticks for Nordic walking (for hotel guests only). Adjacent to the hotel there is Central Information Service office. There you can buy tickets to the caves in the Moravian Karst, boats in the Punkevni Cave, or a cable car and a small train that rides only seldom except for summer. Except for the mentioned structures such Salmovku, a hunting cottage built in the second half of the 19th century in the Swiss style. It used to be a property of the Salm-Reifferscheid family. Of course, we should mention souvenirs stores, and a model of the rocky mill which gave the name to the whole area.
To clear some things – actually the rocky mill was originally a water mill built in the years 1763 to 1784. Then there was a small settlement with couple of houses belonging to log workers. However, the first written mention of the mill dates to 1353 but it is difficult to be certain if it is the same mill. Today, the hotel and restaurant stand on the place of the former mill. The water mill produced energy for ironworks using energy of the Punkva River. Of course, before the industrial revolution, such mills were used to grind grain. These mills were replaced with turbines on the brink of the 20th century.
When we return to the Punkva River we can learn that its stream was adjusted in the 1930. Then Techov water dam was built, today it is known as “Jakubovo Lake”. The dam had enough water to supply the ironworks.
Today the Rocky Mill locality is not popular for its history rather for its opportunities for tourism. For many, the territory is the gate to see caves such as Punkevni or Katerinske, or Macocha Gorge. We remembered the mill which once used to be very unique multipurposed object.

The second biggest town of the Czech Republic and the biggest Moravian metropolis at the same time, this is Brno. This town is, from times immemorial, a rivalry synonym with Prague, as far as their mentality or even their language (dialect) are concerned.
The Moravian Karst is undoubtedly the most beautiful area in the Czech Republic. Blansko, a town offering many historical, cultural, nature, and other sights, is located right there. It is also an ideal destination for a trip for couple of days for its great life in culture and perfect sport opportunities.
Today we look again into the beautiful city in the heart of beautiful nature. Yes, we talk about Blansko, the entrance to the Moravian Karst. But it is not only that. It is a place of fascinating sights we take look at on the following lines.
Once we visited Blansko chateau and St Martin church we set off to a wooden structure. We spotted it when we observed the town. This structure is a church which actually doesn’t fit in the city’s architecture.
Upon seeing the marvels of architecture in Blansko – the wooden church, chateau, Jezek’s bridge – today our goal are not only some other sghts. We also talk about the social life in the city.
In our journeys in the region of South Moravia we stopped at Adamov, a town situated 12 kilometers from Brno. Surrounded by forests the town is located on the confluence of the Svitava and Krtinsky creek. It has a population of 4.5 thousand.
We concluded our walk in Adamov at a restaurant. Then we set off to Josefovske Valley in the lower reaches of Krtinsky Stream about 3 kilometers away. There is a conservation area where one can learn on recent history of the territory
It has been a long time since our last visit to the second largest city in the Czech Republic – Brno. This historical “capital” of Moravia is located on the confluence of the Svratka and Svitava rivers. It has been an important center of culture, justice, and education.
The Moravian metropolis greeted us by a nice sunny day. We set off for some sightseeing. First thing we saw was cathedral of St Peter and Paul.
Are you a woman and as a child you wanted to be a princess? Or a man who wanted to be a knight on a white horse? I personally had it all my childhood. I wanted to be a princess with a gold crown, in a beautiful pink dress. And I had a clear idea of the castle I lived in. He had several turrets and the shutters were red-white. It didn't bother me that it wasn't a castle, but a beautiful castle. Bouzov Castle...
Only five kilometers from the district capital of Blansko there is Rajec-Jestrebi, a town of 3.5 thousand by the Svitava River. This town is the northern gateway to the Moravian Karst however also a town where a beautiful chateau is located.
Cerna Hora, a town of about 2000 (20 kilometers from Brno at the edge of Boskovicka Brazda) is situated in the Blansko district. Surrounded with beautiful forests, the town is famous for its brewery. We take a look at other places you shouldn’t miss as well.
Today we conclude our tour in the Moravian Karst. We visit the Balcarka cave near Ostrov u Macochy village. This cave hides the greatest dripstones. Also, it is the most popular to visit. It unravels its 15 thousand years of history of human settlement. So lets go inside!
About Jihlava we could hear in the news perhaps every day. It is quite obvious - Jihlava is the main city of region and it is no wonder that in a place that literally divides Bohemia and Moravia, and here and there a major ruckus. To be completely clear, where the border actually leads, Maria Theresa left in Jihlava "build" four boundary stones.
Not far from Pernštejn Castle, along the Svratka River, lies the town of Doubravník. At first glance, you will be fascinated by the majestic Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and there is plenty to discover in the area. Let's go to Doubravník together now.
Today we continue in our journey across the Moravian Karst. We have explored the Katerinska Cave and returned to Skalni Mill. Then we took an asphalt road towards the bottom station of the cable car. The cable car was supposed to take us up to the famous and popular Macocha Gorge.
Our walk along the Macocha Nature trail led us to the bottom cable car station which was launched in May 1995. We found ourselves at the altitude of about 361 meters. Our goal was Horni Mustek above the Macocha abyss. Horni Mustek is more than 130 meters higher.
Last week we got finally closer to our goal – the fabulous Macocha gorge. First we took a look at it when we were at Dolni Mustek. Then we went up to see its glory from above from Horni Mustek.
We had paid our visit the House of Nature once we reached Skalni mill, a locality near Blansko district town, also thought about as the entrance to the Moravian Karst. We had also seen some of its surrounding. The trail going to the Katerinska cave is right behind this recently opened exhibition.
Only couple of days ago, a unique interactive exhibition has been opened in the heart of the Moravian Karst (at the meeting point of Suchy and Pusty Zleb) near Skalni Mill. The exhibition take you through the history of this place in a very innovative way.
In the second part cross the Moravian best, we will visit the largest water surface, the lowest point and the deepest abyss.
