Malá Fatra Mountains - Slovakia

Extent: 549 km²

This mountain range takes northwest  area of Slovakia in districts of Žilina, Martin, Čadca and Kysucké Nové Město. With its character, it belongs to the range of Fatra-Tatra area, which forms part of West Carpathian Mountains. Váh-river is dividing Malá Fatra Mountains into Kriváň-Fatra (northern part) and Lučanská Fatra (southern part).

Highest peak: Velký Kriváň (1709 m)

Surface: afforested - beech trees, fir-woods, pine-woods, rests of oak, plough-tails

Non-afforested: meadows

Relief: it is very rough, mountaneous and of highland character

Climatic area: predominantly colder

Malá Fatra Mountains belong, thanks to its scenery and nature beauties, to most popular and visited areas in Slovakia. The area was declared as National Park.

Zazriva mountain village is an ideal place to spend active holidays for all nature lovers. Widely known for not only her beautiful nature that surrounds it, but also a beautiful wooden architecture, folk customs still maintained by and finally "Zázrivské korbáčiky" - traditional Slovak delicacy, whose production in the Zazriva can even try themselves.

In previous parts of our series, we focused mainly alpine mountains. Today we focus on the mountains nearly 1000 m lower. We will talk about Small and Big Fatra. This height difference is reflected in the character of the climate of the mountains and therefore also on slightly different of risk of movement in this area.

Small Fatra Mountains - this is most accessible mountaneous target of all Czechs, travelling to Slovakia. The village of Terchová, placed approx. 25 kilometres distant from Žilina, is a mian centre of Small Fatra.

The community of Terchova (Slovakia) is ensnared with various legends, joined especially with George (Juraj) Janošík, local native. Nevertheless, hardly anybody of Slovakia or Czech Republic does not know "Brigand Captain" and his suite. At present, his existence is reminded with International Folklore Festival - "Janošík Days", the greatest one of such type in Slovakia.

The town of Rajecké Teplice is placed in Žilina Region, inside picturesque valley of Rajčianka-river. The seat became especially famous for its nature healing thermal spa. belonging to most known and most visited spa-towns in Slovakia.

Martin is cultural as well as economical seat of Turiec, North Slovak Region. In 1994, the town was declared as Slovak Centre of National Culture. So, Martin became a very attractive target, not only for local tradition and its monuments.
