SK, Orava: Dolný Kubín – A Town of Poetic Beauty II.
The first of them is the building of the District Office, opposite it is the multi-purpose building of the Department Store and in the imaginary center between them is the Municipal Cultural Center. The latter cultural institution offers visitors a theater, cinema, exhibition hall and variety hall, where many social events take place regularly.
Just a few tens of meters from the square is situated the embankment of the river Orava. Here you will find a small local market, connection to the newly built bike paths and rest areas with benches, stands or a pump, but the main landmark is the Wooden Covered Colonnade Bridge.
Although the bridge construction does not boast a long history, as it was built in 1994, it is still one of the most sought-after and most photographed monuments in the city. It is not surprising that it is set in a natural environment, complemented by floral decoration and as a whole looks really picturesque. Approximately in the middle of the bridge structure there are small retail spaces and the views from the Colonnade Bridge are an unmistakable experience. The bridge connects the Velký Bysterec district with the historical part of the town.
After crossing this technical monument, we find ourselves in the Martin Kukučín Park. The founder of modern Slovak prose has his memorial decorated with the surrounding flora. You will also find a music pavilion, children's attractions or a great pizzeria. But the greatest attention is drawn to the "mini zoo", where noble peacocks, bred pheasants, as well as cute guinea pigs run.
Not far from around Radlinského Street there is a fantastic confectionery, ice cream, wine bar and fast food, which will satisfy even the most hungry or the youngest tourists. The architecture is also interesting, especially as regards the building of the so-called French bistro, which not only from the outside gives the impression of a company from the French boulevard.
Then we walk through the house with various shops and retail spaces and stop at the corner of Radlinského and Samuel Novák streets, where the Orava Library of Anton Habovštiak is located. This cultural, information and educational institution has been supporting lifelong learning for more than seven decades, focusing on children and organizing a number of literary events throughout the year.
Opposite the library proudly rises the Parish Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria. It is a single-nave neo-Gothic sacral building with a rectangular end of the presbytery and a tower from 1885 to 1886. As usual, the church was built on the site of an older Gothic building from the 14th century. The surroundings of the tavern are rich and nicely landscaped greenery and only a few meters away is the Memorial dedicated to the author of the text of the Slovak anthem, Janek Matúšek.
